10 Bad WWE Gimmicks (With One Redeeming Quality)

WWE has featured some of the greatest wrestling gimmicks of all time. The Undertaker, Kane, and The Rock are all products of creative input from WWE. The company has also featured its fair share of awful gimmicks.

The Gobbledy Gooker, Mantaur, and Max Moon are often remembered among the top awful gimmicks the WWE has produced. Although those three had basically no redeeming factors, this list will examine 10 bad WWE gimmicks with one redeeming quality.

10 Kerwin White (Redeeming Quality: Examined An Authentic Occurance Within The Latin Community)

Kerwin White

Kerwin White was one of the worst gimmicks of the entire Ruthless Aggression Era. Although Chavo Guerrero's portrayal was awful, the concept behind the gimmick was actually pretty deep. Some Latinos have issues with identity since "being Latin" encompasses so many people from different backgrounds, countries, and races.

A Latino wanting to denounce their "Latiness" is a real occurrence that might be too complicated for wrestling to examine. Kerwin White was also NOT the best representation of this complex idea. Still, for a sector of the Latin audience, it was fun to see a heel portrayal of a true issue that often rubs some Latinos the wrong way.

9 "Mr. Ass" Billy Gunn (Redeeming Quality: Entrance Song)

Billy Gunn WWE

Billy Gunn has had a career resurgence at AEW. Many fans still remember him as a member of D-Generation X and as one-half of The New Age Outlaws alongside Road Dogg. Although those two units helped Billy Gunn become a star, his "Mr. Ass" gimmick wasn't nearly as awesome.

Billy Gunn randomly became known as "Mr. Ass" in 1999. He liked asses... that was the entire gimmick. Although Mr. Ass was not good, his insane entrance song was. "Assman" was so over the top that fans couldn't help but sing along.

8 Chainsaw Charlie (Redeeming Quality: Terry Funk)

Chainsaw Charlie

Terry Funk is a wrestling icon that oftentimes doesn't get the respect he deserves. He was NWA World Heavyweight Champion in the '70s, wrestled five-star matches in the '80s, and reinvented himself in ECW in the '90s. During the Attitude Era, Funk adopted a bad gimmick, Chainsaw Charlie.

The gimmick was random and the idea was that Terry Funk had a chainsaw. Funk turned lemons into lemonade his entire career. This gimmick was dumb, even though Funk supposedly suggested the idea, but anytime Funk was on the screen he was so over the top that fans couldn't help but be entertained especially when he was next to Mick Foley.

7 Jean-Pierre LaFitte (Redeeming Quality: Match Vs. Bret Hart At In Your House 3)

Bret Hart v Jean-Pierre Lafitte In Your House 3 Cropped

Jean-Pierre LaFitte was better known as Pierre from The Quebecers. In 1995 he was adopting a horrible pirate gimmick that not even the most simple-minded fan could've found entertaining. The gimmick was forgettable and short-lived in WWE, but did feature one great match at In Your House 3. Jean-Pierre LaFitte battled Bret Hart in a contest that is a forgotten gem. It was the best match on the card that was main evented by Diesel and Shawn Michaels.

6 The Boogeyman (Redeeming Quality: Feud With Sharmell)

Sharmell vs The Boogeyman

The Boogeyman was a random supernatural wrestler of the Ruthless Aggression Era. Although he was terrifying, his entire gimmick was that he was scary looking and ate worms. One of the best storylines featuring Boogeyman involved King Booker and Queen Sharmell.

Sharmell was legitimately terrified of Boogeyman. She was also a monster heel in WWE at the time. It was always fun to see her reactions to The Boogeyman who wreaked havoc on her and Booker for a short time.

5 Mr. America (Redeeming Quality: Was A Nod To A Longtime Wrestling Gimmick)

Mr America Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan was incredibly successful as both red-and-yellow 'American Hero' Hogan and Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Hogan hardly deviated from those two gimmicks after he became world-famous, but he did adopt one horrible gimmick during his return to WWE, Mr. America. Mr. America was Hogan under a mask.

He was supposed to be "fired" from WWE and Vince McMahon couldn't tell it was Hogan. The whole concept was insane. Interestingly, this wasn't the first time the storyline was ever portrayed. In the early days of wrestling, wrestlers often tried to disguise themselves as a masked wrestler after being fired. Andre the Giant and Dusty Rhodes both did the gimmick at different points in their career.

4 Repo Man (Redeeming Quality: Was A Great Concept)

Repo Man existed in an era of WWE where everyone was adopting an occupation as a gimmick. The portrayal of the Repo Man as a character in WWE was horrible. The Hamburgler was more menacing than the Repo Man. The Repo Man in real life is a pretty terrifying figure. WWE would've created a gimmick at the level of The Big Bossman if they would have portrayed the Repo Man as a serious menace instead of a joke.

3 Gillberg (Redeeming Quality: Was Hilarious)

Gillberg

Gillberg was a parody of WCW's Goldberg. He was never supposed to be taken seriously. Gillberg eventually won the WWE Light Heavyweight Championship and the gimmick overstayed its welcome. Although no one would call the gimmick "good," it was a really funny concept. Duane Gill played the role and it's often remembered as one of the funniest (albeit bad) gimmicks in WWE history.

2 Issac Yankem DDS (Redeeming Quality: Cage Match Against Bret Hart)

 Issac Yankem DDS Bret Hart

Issac Yankem DDS was the first major gimmick Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane) portrayed in WWE. The "scary dentist" gimmick was horrible. Sure, people are scared of the dentist, but that doesn't mean it's a great idea for a WWE wrestler. The one redeeming factor of Jacobs' time as Issac Yankem was his Cage Match against Bret Hart. The match was one of the first cage matches in the history of Raw and a solid bout between the two WWE Hall of Famers.

1 Eugene (Redeeming Quality: Representation)

Eugene

Eugene is considered one of the worst gimmicks in the history of WWE. His heel turn was especially horrendous, but he did have moments of levity and even won the tag team titles. Eugene was also portrayed by an able-bodied person, which is also problematic for many reasons. The one important thing that Eugene did do for WWE was provide representation in the world of wrestling for people with mental health disabilities.

A poor portrayal, like Eugene, is obviously awful, but so is zero representation, which is what the world of wrestling saw in the mental health disability space before Eugene. For some viewers, Eugene was the first portrayal of a person with a mental health disability that they were meant to root for, which was great, because so few protagonists in television have ever been portrayed in that matter. If Eugene had been approached with more care (and been adopted by a person with an actual disability), it could have been a big step for people with mental disabilities in wrestling and on television, instead of just a bad gimmick.
