10 Best Promos Of MJF's AEW Career, Ranked

MJF quickly established himself as one of AEW’s best heels in 2019 and has maintained that status ever since. He’s undoubtedly most known for his skills on the mic and his ability to command an audience, though his in-ring work is nothing to sneeze at, either.

Time and time again, that there are few workers on his level with a mic in hand, as he has ripped through his opponents and given fans a deeper look at what makes him tick. Throughout his AEW tenure, MJF has had more than a few memorable performances on the mic. Here’s a list of ten of the best.

The Pinnacle was on a roll coming off their victory against the Inner Circle at AEW’s first-ever Blood and Guts. This promo was part of a segment to celebrate their win, featuring champagne, pretty women, and the Pinnacle in pastel suits. At the end of the segment, Tully Blanchard awarded each member of Pinnacle with a Rolex, continuing the trend in wrestling that the more well-dressed a man is the eviler he is.

MJF’s promo, wherein he declared that he was the new “demo-god” of AEW, cemented the idea that he did in fact take Jericho’s place as the top heel of the company.

MJF’s feud with the Inner Circle brewed for months before it finally came into action. While fans were led to believe that MJF was attempting to take control of the Inner Circle, he was actually trying to dismantle it from the inside while creating his own separate team.

The Pinnacle turned heads as soon as the group was revealed.

Through this promo, Max explained the strengths of each wrestler and told those in AEW why exactly they should fear the newly-formed Pinnacle. A highlight of this promo is that it convinced fans that Shawn Spears was a good get for any faction in AEW.

While Darby Allin was out with injury (thanks to the Pinnacle), MJF paid a visit to Sting in the middle of the ring. He, Shawn Spears, and Wardlow hit Sting with a chair shot so that MJF could take the mic and further taunt Darby Allin.

One of the biggest takeaways from this promo is when MJF refers to himself as “the past, present, and future of professional wrestling.” As despicable as MJF is, there’s a lot of truth to those words; his heelish character is in many ways a callback to heels like Roddy Piper, he is presently one of the biggest heels in wrestling, and he’s almost certain to continue to be one long into the future.

7 “Last Supper” May 19, 2021

The Pinnacle AEW Debut

Any setting for a promo besides in the ring with a mic or somewhere backstage with an interviewer helps add a bit more to the wrestler’s message. In this instance, the AEW camera crew finds the Pinnacle eating dinner and enjoying wine together. We see MJF as he’s growing extremely impatient with the Inner Circle’s antics; it’s kind of like a peek at the deranged sociopath that lies beneath MJF’s calm, smug demeanor.

The double entendre with this promo’s title is that even though the Pinnacle is dining together, the Inner Circle is going to have their “last supper” as a group once the Pinnacle defeats them at Double or Nothing.

6 “Fake” December 11, 2019

mjf cody rhodes aew revolution dynamite stipulations

This was MJF’s second promo against Cody. First, MJF calls a staff member to the ring and tells them to kiss his Dynamite Diamond ring. Whether this was intended or not, it’s an interesting parallel to Cody’s “kiss the ring” gimmick during his time in ROH.

Throughout the rest of this promo, MJF effectively frames the storyline as Cody and the AEW fans being together against MJF. This heel work helped Cody become the most over babyface in AEW, something he struggled to achieve again once his feud with MJF ended.

5 “The Real Cody” November 14, 2019

MJF Cody

This was MJF’s first promo since his betrayal against Cody at 2019’s Full Gear PPV, wherein he threw in the towel on Cody’s behalf and cost him the opportunity to ever win the AEW World Championship. It was the first time AEW fans could see MJF’s true colors that they always knew lurked beneath that Burberry scarf.

MJF airs his grievances against Cody and tries to warn the audience that the man they’re cheering is completely fake. His attempts obviously fail (perhaps he was just 2 years too early) and the promo kicks off MJF and Cody’s singles feud.

4 “War of Words” November 24, 2021

CM Punk WWE references during promo segment with MJF

When CM Punk returned to professional wrestling through AEW, fans began to buzz about whom he could potentially face. One of the most intriguing options was MJF, who in many ways is very similar to Punk himself. Both are known for their big mouths and fighting words, so fans could only imagine what a mic battle between them would look like.

On November 24, those fans finally found out.

This was one of the longest promo segments in all of AEW, lasting about 18 minutes. It was a clash of two promo titans and showed the dedication that AEW was about to put into telling MJF and CM Punk’s story.

3 “Your Spot” September 1, 2021

mjf

A recurring trend in MJF’s feuds is that he often sees a part of himself in the wrestlers he faces, and for that, he wants to destroy them. This was especially the case in his feud against Chris Jericho.

This promo is part of an interview with Tony Schiavone. There’s no crowd, which makes it much easier to focus on MJF’s intonation and facial expressions. He vows to knock Jericho off the top of the pro wrestling mountain and take his place as the new king of AEW.

2 “State of the Industry” July 29, 2020

MJF in AEW

During his feud against AEW Champion Jon Moxley, MJF began a political campaign of sorts. In it, he claimed that Moxley was not bringing about the “paradigm shift” he once promised. Instead, he was just abusing his influence as the world champion and an ex-WWE superstar.

A political gimmick is a sure-fire way to make people hate you, since no one in the 2020s is more hated than a politician.

MJF AEW Entrance

One of the most powerful aspects of pro wrestling is its ability to blur the lines between fiction and reality. Through this promo, MJF proved he is a master of that very thing.

This segment was meant to be MJF’s response to CM Punk calling him out. Instead of the typical disses he usually delivers, MJF stunned both the audience and CM Punk with a heart-wrenching story about how much the Voice of the Voiceless meant to him as a child, and how painful it was for him when CM Punk left the wrestling world. MJF showing vulnerability for really the first time in AEW added such amazing complexity to his character and took his feud with Punk from good to extraordinary.
