10 Harsh Realities Of Re-Watching Triple H's WWE Career

Triple H is no doubt one of the most successful and notable WWE wrestlers of all time, with a huge number of world title reigns and a long career which not too many superstars can match. Not everything is as good as it seems though.

There are a number of harsh realities when going back and looking over Triple H’s WWE career, both broadly speaking and also when it comes to specific matches and feuds. Whether it be bad booking, backstage politics, or hindsight helping fans to realize how bad something was, there are a lot of hard truths that people should accept about Triple H’s WWE career.

10 Ended The Summer Of Punk

CM Punk had a huge rise to the top in 2011, becoming the most over name in the company and even rivaling John Cena for a short time as the top merchandise seller. However, just when he was on a roll as WWE Champion, WWE wanted the focus to be on part-timer Triple H.

The inclusion of Kevin Nash and subsequent feuds including Triple H dominated WWE television, leaving Punk to fall by the wayside and even lose to Triple H, effectively ending what became known as the “Summer of Punk”.

9 D-Generation X Was Never A Top Act

Original D-Generation X

WWE paints a picture of the D-Generation X stable being a driving force behind the Attitude Era, bringing risque programming to the company and being a top act. However, this was never actually a case, as DX’s influence wasn’t as good as they claim.

There were some entertaining points for sure, but for the most part they were in and around the midcard and upper midcard as an act that was sometimes funny and sometimes painfully unfunny too. DX is only the “legendary” faction it is today due to WWE rewriting their own history and bringing the group back time and time again.

8 Racist/Offensive Stories

When touching on D-Generation X, the group’s content was sometimes too offensive, and sometimes even racist. Triple H has been involved in racially motivated storylines on more than one occasion, including with the likes of the Nation of Domination and Booker T.

The latter was even worse considering they built up a whole WrestleMania feud based on this, only for Booker T to lose against the horrible heel for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was an awfully booked program and one which paints Triple H in a terrible light.

7 Derailed Goldberg

Triple H is considered as one of the greatest world champions of all time, but when you look back at his “Reign Of Terror”, you could almost make a full list of harsh realities in that time period alone. One example of how poorly his world title reign affected others is with Goldberg.

Goldberg was still a massive name when he arrived in WWE, and he could’ve been a major star and draw. However, just a few months into his run, he was defeated with just one sledgehammer shot by Triple H. Triple H would go on to also beat Goldberg later in the year too, and both these matches derailed Goldberg’s time in the company hugely to the point where he would leave after a year.

6 Needed Stipulations To Have Classic Matches

Triple H was great in the ring and a strong storyteller, but if you look at his classic matches against the likes of Cactus Jack, The Undertaker, Batista, and Steve Austin, he always needed some sort of gimmick or stipulation to help him towards a classic match.

In fact, arguably his best basic singles match ever came when he took on Daniel Bryan - decades into his career. When you look at his highest matches on cagematch.net, only 3 of his top 25 matches are normal singles bouts, perhaps suggesting he wasn’t as good as WWE claimed inside the ring.

5 Nearly Ruined Brock Lesnar’s Second WWE Run

Triple H has gone up against many top names over the years and had big feuds, but one which was awful when looking back was against Brock Lesnar. Lesnar was already struggling after a loss to John Cena after his WWE comeback, but he then spent a full year feuding with Triple H, having three underwhelming matches.

It didn’t help that Triple H won the biggest of these matches at WrestleMania. Lesnar would need to end The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak to properly recover from the damage done spending a year feuding with Triple H back in 2012 and 2013.

4 Worst WWE Match Ever

Brothers of Destruction v DX Crown Jewel 2018 Cropped-1

Triple H may be billed as one of the greatest ever, but he was a part of one of, if not the very worst WWE match of all time. At Crown Jewel 2018, WWE wheeled out four old stars in Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kane, and The Undertaker for a “dream tag team match”.

It was a complete mess, with near-disasters, injuries, clunky moments, and even Kane’s mask falling off. The match felt like a parody, and for Triple H to be involved is certainly a rough part of his career.

3 No Retirement Match

To be fair to Triple H, he was someone who did often look good despite his growing age, and it felt as though he was the perfect person to have one great last retirement match when the time was right. Unfortunately, health concerns led to him never getting that moment.

His last “match” was a random brawl in front of no fans involving Randy Orton, which was a huge shame. This is a harsh reality of his career for sure.

2 Took The Rock’s Moment

It took until WrestleMania 28 for The Rock to win a WrestleMania main event and stand tall with his hand raised. For someone who is one of the biggest stars in history, you’d think he would have gotten at least one WrestleMania moment. His time was supposed to come at WrestleMania 16, but instead, WWE had Triple H be the first ever heel to stand tall to close out WrestleMania.

Of course, this isn’t Triple H’s fault, but it is still a harsh reality of rewatching his career, with The Rock having to wait another 12 years to get that moment - long after his full-time WWE run came to an end.

1 Boring WrestleMania Main Events

Triple H was a main eventer for most of his career, and on seven occasions he was in the main event of WrestleMania. However, on more than occasion, his show-closing matches stunk up the card.

WrestleMania’s 16 fatal four way was an overbooked mess, WrestleMania versus Chris Jericho was overshadowed by other stuff on the card, WrestleMania 25 against Randy Orton was a dud considering a strong build, and WrestleMania 32 one-on-one with Roman Reigns was a snooze-fest.
