10 Quotes That Prove Woody & Buzz Have The Best Disney Friendship
Woody and Buzz Lightyear have a friendship that is very much the heart of the Toy Story series and they share so many memorable moments together.
Pixar began their ground-breaking animated movie adventure with Toy Story and the friendship between Woody and Buzz Lightyear has been the heart of those stories ever since. In the beginning, these two did not get along at all, but watching their relationship grow over several movies was a real treat.
While they still disagreed at times, Woody and Buzz were at their best when they were supporting each other and risking themselves to save the other. And the movies feature a number of memorable quotes that highlight just how special this friendship was.
10 Giving Buzz A Pep Talk
Woody: "Why Would Andy Want You? Look At You! You're A Buzz Lightyear!"
The reason these toys had a rocky beginning to their relationship was Woody's own jealousy toward Buzz. As Andy's new cool toy, Woody felt he was being replaced even though he refused to admit to anyone that Andy might prefer the space ranger.
However, when Buzz faces a crisis upon realizing he is actually a toy, Woody puts aside his jealousy to make Buzz feel better. He embraced his own feelings of inadequacy to explain to Buzz why he is exactly the kind of toy Andy would love more than any other.
9 A Brave Face
Buzz: "You Guarantee It, Huh?" Woody:" I Don't Know Buzz."
The Toy Story movies really pull at the audience's heartstrings by showing the fears toys have of their children growing older and not wanting to play with them anymore. This becomes a reality in Toy Story 3 as Andy gets ready to go off to college and move on from them.
While the other toys are devastated, Woody and Buzz take it upon themselves to boost morale and tell the others that everything will be fine. But when the two friends are alone together, they are honest with each other about their own fears and doubts.
8 Taking Flight
Buzz: "This Isn't Flying, This Is Falling With Style!"
The first time they meet, Buzz puts on an impressive albeit very lucky flying demonstration which Woody dismisses as "falling with style." It speaks to their early relationship as Woody was filled with anger while Buzz was sure he was more than a toy.
However, when escaping from Sid's house together, Woody is shocked that Buzz does in fact seem to be flying. But then it is Buzz who calls it "falling with style." It is the moment they really turn from enemies to friends with Woody admitting Buzz was something special and Buzz allowing himself to be more grounded.
7 Returning To Andy
Buzz: "Come On, Sheriff. There's A Kid In That House Who Needs Us."
Part of the reason the first movie is still considered the best by many fans is that fun battling dynamic between Woody and Buzz. For Woody, being there for Andy is his top priority but Buzz sees himself as an actual space ranger meant to be on intergalactic missions.
But it is Woody that helps to convince Buzz that being a toy is actually an even more important job because of the joy they bring Andy. Buzz not only accepts this new role but helps to show Woody that he is still just as important to Andy.
6 Rescuing Woody
Buzz: "Woody Once Risked His Life To Save Mine, And I Couldn't Call Myself His Friend If I Wasn't Willing To Do The Same."
Despite being children's toys, the Toy Story crew end up in dangerous situations constantly over the course of these movies. But they are usually the ones who are risking their lives to save the other.
After Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz rallies the other toys to go on a mission to save him. Buzz shows the kind of friend that he is by leading this rescue but he also acknowledges that it is the same thing that Woody did for him when he was in need.
5 Giving Woody A Pep Talk
Buzz: "Woody, You're Not A Collector's Item, You're A Child's Plaything. You - Are - A *Toy*!"
While these friends stick their necks out for each other, they are also just as valuable as allies because they tell each other what they need to hear at times. This is especially true when Buzz locates Woody only to find that Woody is actually considering becoming a collector's item.
Though Woody has doubts about how long Andy will want him, Buzz is there to remind him of that same purpose that Woody taught him in the first movie. He even uses the same assertive language that Woody used just to show how similar these two are.
4 Moving On
Buzz: "And What's Important Now Is We Stay Together."
Though Woody and Buzz went to great lengths to convince the other that being there for Andy was what they were meant to do, that changes in Toy Story 3. The other toys decide that they are better off finding a new child who will want them and Buzz agrees that they fulfilled their mission with Andy.
This is the first big argument Woody and Buzz have since becoming friends as Buzz feels ensuring that they are together is what is really important. While Woody is initially very much against this, he eventually realizes that Buzz is right.
3 Letting Woody Go
Buzz: "Bonnie Will Be Okay."
In Toy Story 4, Woody and the others have a new human child named Bonnie and also finds Woody reuniting with Bo Peep who was given away years ago. It puts Woody on a strange crossroads as he is pulled towards starting a new adventure with Bo Peep and fulfilling his duty to Bonnie.
At the end of the movie, Woody prepares to say goodbye to Bo Peep again and reunite with Bonnie. But Buzz recognizes what his friend needs and lets Woody know that Bonnie will be okay without him and Woody is free to follow his heart.
2 Woody Finds Himself
Buzz: "He's Not Lost. Not Anymore."
Woody's position in Toy Story 4 is an interesting one as he finds himself with a loving child but Bonnie isn't really interested in him as much as the other toys. Though he still has that need to make her happy, he feels somewhat lost with his purpose as Bonnie's toy.
When Woody finally decides to head out into the unknown with Bo Peep, some of the other toys are sad to see him go. They worry that Woody is just another lost toy now, but Buzz sees it as a bittersweet moment as he is happy to see his friend find happiness of his own.
1 Friends Until The End
Woody: "Besides, When It All Ends I'll Have Old Buzz Lightyear To Keep Me Company - For Infinity And Beyond."
Throughout the movies, Woody and Buzz face a lot of uncertainty together. But through it all, they are by each other's side to help overcome the challenges that they can and offer support in the moments that are too much.
In Toy Story 2, Woody admits that he knows Andy will eventually not need him anymore, but he takes comfort in the fact that he will still have Buzz when that day comes. And though they do eventually go their separate ways "and beyond" seems to suggest even that won't break their bond.
