10 Randy Orton WrestleMania Matches (And Who He Should Have Faced Instead)
Randy Orton has had one of the most decorated careers of all time. He has achieved every major accolade in the WWE and is a future first-ballot WWE Hall of Famer. With 18 WrestleMania appearances, Orton has had some classic payoffs and great feuds that were perfectly built up to a match at WrestleMania.

His "Legend Killer" gimmick saw him compete with The Undertaker in a case of perfect booking. The implosion of Legacy led to a triple threat match between the three that was great. There have also been a few WrestleMania matches in Orton's career where he definitely should have faced a different opponent. This list will examine ten of them.
10 WrestleMania 22 - Vs. Kurt Angle Vs. Rey Mysterio (Should Have Faced: ONLY Rey Mysterio)
Rey Mysterio's build-up to WrestleMania 22 was perfect. He was a Royal Rumble winner who was battling for the honor of Eddie Guerrero. Orton's infamous "Eddie Guerrero is in hell" line was all fans needed to see to root for Mysterio.
The two had a match at No Way Out 2006 before 'Mania where Orton defeated Mysterio to earn a spot at WrestleMania 22. Instead, this match should have been avoided, Orton should have beaten Kurt Angle at No Way Out to earn the World Heavyweight Championship, and the two should have competed at WrestleMania 22 for the title.
9 WrestleMania 28 - Vs. Kane (Should Have Faced: Daniel Bryan)
2012 was a down year for Randy Orton. His feud with Kane was lackluster, and the match had one of the poorest buildups of any 'Mania match in Orton's career.
Instead of forcing Orton to compete with Kane in a nothing match, it could have been a chance to showcase the first "Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton" match ever. Bryan entered as champion and competed in a forgettable World Heavyweight Championship match against Sheamus.
8 WrestleMania 38 - w/Riddle Vs.The Street Profits (Should Have Faced: The Usos)
There was supposed to be a huge hoopla for the Brock Vs Roman title unification match, but most fans were too over the Roman/Lesnar feud to care. A title unification match that could have garnered interest would have been RK-Bro Vs The Usos.
The unification title match eventually happened on SmackDown, and it could have been a bigger event if it happened alongside the other title unification match.
7 WrestleMania 24 - Vs. John Cena Vs. Triple H (Should Have Faced: ONLY John Cena)
Despite being "The Rock and Steve Austin" of their generation, John Cena and Randy Orton never had a singles match at WrestleMania. Orton entered WrestleMania 24 as the WWE Champion and it would have worked out better long-term if Triple H was not included in this match.
Yes, WrestleMania 24 featured one of the best 'Mania matches of Randy Orton's career, but it was a perfect chance to see a classic Orton vs Cena match that would have delivered even without Triple H.
6 WrestleMania 34 - Vs. Jinder Mahal Vs. Bobby Roode Vs. Rusev (Should Have Faced: Braun Strowman)
At WrestleMania 34, Braun Strowman and Randy Orton were two of the biggest names in the WWE. Their matches at 'Mania felt like they were randomly thrown together. Orton defended his WWE United States Championship in a forgettable match.

Braun Strowman's tag team match with Nicholas, son of referee John Cone, was sweet, but (unless Braun was his favorite wrestler) any star could have partnered with him to earn tag team gold. Strowman and Orton could have had a classic mid-card title match instead.
5 WrestleMania 27 - Vs CM Punk (Should Have Faced: John Cena And CM Punk)
WrestleMania 27 will always be remembered as the 'Mania main evented by The Miz. Randy Orton and CM Punk put on a match far better than The Miz and John Cena.
In retrospect, The Miz should have never been the champion, CM Punk deserved the main event spot at WrestleMania 27, and a triple threat featuring Orton, CM Punk, and Cena would have been an absolute classic.
4 WrestleMania 37 - Vs. The Fiend (Should Have Faced: Bobby Lashley)
Although Orton vs The Fiend at WrestleMania 37 wasn't a bad match, the two stars, Bray Wyatt and Orton, had already competed in a terrible match at WrestleMania 33. Instead, it would have been fun to see Orton help put over Bobby Lashley in a WWE Championship match.
Drew McIntyre was a fair opponent for Lashley, but it could have helped move the bar much further for Lashley if he competed against a legend at the level of Randy Orton.
3 WrestleMania 29 - w/Sheamus & The Big Show Vs. The Shield (Should Have Faced: Chris Jericho)
WrestleMania 29 featured Orton competing with a random team-up featuring Sheamus & The Big Show. The match was clearly booked to put over The Shield.

Orton really had no major stakes in this match and, overall, he felt like a random addition. Chris Jericho competed in a forgettable match against Fandango. Pairing Jericho and Orton would have been a perfect matchup between the two veteran stars, who only have a few memorable feuds against each other.
2 WrestleMania 23 - Money In The Bank Ladder Match (Should Have Faced: Sabu)
Orton's only 'Mania Money In The Bank Ladder Match happened at WrestleMania 23. In all honesty, the match would have been fine without him. Most fans expected an emerging name like Finlay, CM Punk, or Mr. Kennedy to win the match anyway.
At this time, the WWE was struggling to give its ECW reboot a solid audience, and placing an established star like Orton against an established ECW star could have been big. Sabu put on some great matches against John Cena. He and Orton would have had a classic match. To this day, the two have still never crossed paths in the ring.
1 WrestleMania 35 - Vs. AJ Styles (Should Have Faced: Brock Lesnar)
AJ Styles vs Randy Orton at WrestleMania 35 would have been more impactful if it was the first time they met in the ring, like Style's match against Edge at WrestleMania 38. Brock Lesnar and Orton have been wrestling against each other since 2002, but have had very few singles matches. He's also a legend Orton has never defeated.
Instead of having Lesnar and Seth Rollins compete for the Universal Championship, Orton vs Lesnar could have been iconic. The buildup and history between these two could have been a huge 'Mania match even without the addition of a WWE title.
