10 WWE "I Quit" Matches You Completely Forgot About
I Quit matches are often some of the most exciting encounters in WWE history, with this gimmick bringing some truly brutal exchanges. Wrestlers have to hurt the other so badly they no longer want to compete, and that is something that has created some incredible battles over the years.RELATED: Nigerian Drum Fight & 9 Other Stipulations Based On LocationsHowever, while the iconic I Quit matches are between The Rock and Mankind or John Cena and JBL, there are also plenty of encounters within this stipulation that have been forgotten about over the years. Whether it's because they simply weren't that good or that the storyline ended up being forgotten generally, these matches have not lasted in the history books.
10 Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy (Backlash 2009)
The rivalry between Matt and Jeff Hardy wasn't something that ever connected with the WWE Universe. Despite the best efforts of both men and the company itself, fans found it hard to buy into the idea of the brothers hating each other.
However, their heated rivalry is what was pushed at that time, which is what led this particular I Quit match to be forgotten about. While the encounter itself was enjoyable between the two men, the storyline wasn't good enough to make people recall this match. Jeff did get the win on the night though after strapping Matt to a table, teasing a leg drop, which he would hit even after Matt quit.
9 Beth Phoenix vs. Melina (One Night Stand 2008)
Beth Phoenix and Melina had the first-ever women's I Quit match in WWE history, which is why it should be a memorable encounter. However, the match itself was only a short one and didn't quite go down in the history books in the manner which it should have, with Beth getting the win after locking Melina into a submission and forcing her to quit.

The two women were fantastic wrestlers, but the match itself isn't one that people still talk about to this day. A lot of people have forgotten about this match, especially with so many first-time matches in women's history coming after this point.
8 Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger (Extreme Rules, 2013)
Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger are two talented wrestlers, but their storyline against each other was hit and miss. This particular I Quit match was actually to crown a number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, which instantly made the stipulation pointless.
People just wanted to see someone earn a title shot, with the storyline not requiring a match of this brutality. This was just a forced stipulation for the sake of the PPV, which is why it hasn't been remembered. This was finished when Del Rio locked in a Crossarmbreaker, giving The Mexican Aristocrat the victory.
7 Jack Gallagher vs. Ariya Daivari (205 Live, 1/17/17)
205 Live wasn't a show that was watched frequently by the entire WWE Universe, which instantly meant that a lot of people didn't see this. While WWE did do a good job of building up the storyline between Jack Gallagher and Ariya Daivari, the I Quit match is one that many don't remember.
It wasn't one of the most violent matches in WWE history, especially with the PG restrictions at the time. Neither man went on to have major careers with the company either, and that is what led to this match being forgotten. However, Gallagher was the man who got his arm raised here, after locking in a submission with his umbrella adding further pressure.
6 Big Show vs. Ryan Taylor (SmackDown, 10/17/08)
This was another very forgettable I Quit match, with this one taking place on an episode of SmackDown as a means of pushing Big Show at the time. Ryan Taylor was nothing more than an enhancement talent, which led to this being a basic squash match.
Because of that, it is no surprise that people have forgotten this encounter, as it was merely done to make Show as impressive as possible. However, the added I Quit stipulation wasn't necessary for this situation, with the WWE star winning via a Camel Clutch.
5 John Cena vs. The Miz (Over The Limit 2011)
John Cena's storyline with The Miz was never one that truly wowed people as their matches didn't end up being memorable overall. That was the case when they competed in an I Quit match at Over The Limit 2011, which was a glorified handicap match due to Alex Riley.

The match was fine, but it didn't end up becoming a classic, which is why no fans ended up talking about it in the long run. The Miz worked hard throughout the encounter, and Cena brought his usual star power, but this isn't a clinic that people still discuss. WWE tried to do the pre-taped I Quit finish here, but it didn't work and Cena eventually won by putting Miz in an Attitude Adjustment position, which led to Miz quitting.
4 Steve Austin vs. Ken Shamrock (Raw, 10/26/98)
Steve Austin and Ken Shamrock were two huge names during the Attitude Era, and this was one of the earliest I Quit matches in WWE history. However, that doesn't make this one of the most memorable matches within this particular stipulation.
Taking place on an episode of Monday Night Raw, this match instantly didn't feel as important as it should have. It was quite a quick encounter in comparison to other I Quit matches and while it was a real brawl, both men had far more memorable matches in their careers that ended up being spoken about. Plus, this had a ridiculous finish with Shamrock tapping out and not actually saying the words that the stipulation demanded.
3 Toni Storm vs. Kay Lee Ray (NXT UK, 2/27/20)
This is one of the newest I Quit matches that have taken place in WWE, with two of the best female talents in the company. It also featured a weak finish as Toni Storm never actually quit, but instead, Kay Lee Ray stomped on a chair that had her head inside, forcing an end. With it taking place in NXT UK, not everybody watched the match, which is why it isn't spoken about as much.
It is a shame because the two women got inventive throughout the match to try and make it different in comparison to other I Quit bouts. However, it simply hasn't gone down in the history books.
2 Noam Dar vs. Cedric Alexander (205 Live, 7/17/17)
This was another I Quit match that took place on 205 Live, and it was an example of two talented wrestlers competing in a stipulation that didn't quite feel fitting. Their rivalry didn't need this gimmick attached to it, especially when it wasn't pushed to a PPV.

This wasn't as violent as a typical I Quit match, which is something that the stipulation really needs to make it feel important. While it featured some enjoyable wrestling, this isn't one that anybody remembers, with the finish of Cedric Alexander stomping down on Noam Dar's hand inside of a chair which forced him to quit.
1 John Cena vs. Rusev (Payback 2015)
This was one of the worst I Quit matches in history, which is why people do not talk about it anymore. It was a very long match, which is often the case with this stipulation, but it took place at a slow pace which stopped it from really kicking into the next gear.
It was a shame because the two men were big stars and the match was built as a powerhouse battle. Their rivalry was certainly an enjoyable one, but this particular encounter isn't one that people talk about in comparison to their WrestleMania XXX match. In the end, it was Lana who quit on Rusev's behalf here as Cena had the STF locked in with the ring rope.
