5 Things That Make No Sense About Sydney (& 5 About Dina)

I Am Not Okay With This' two main girls may be relatable, but not everything about them adds up.

Sydney and Dina are best friends in the recent Netflix series, I Am Not Okay With ThisProduced by creators of Stranger Things and The End Of The F***ing Worldthe Sophia Lillis series takes elements from both of these shows and meshes them to form one angsty, nostalgic, superpowered teen drama.

Sydney discovers that her anxiety and other strong emotions are bursting out of her in the form of telekinesis... or something. Her powers aren't clear, as they seem to evolve every time they explode out of her. She doesn't have control over them, just as she doesn't have control over her emotions. Meanwhile, her best friend Dina is always there for to help out - even when things just don't make sense. Here are five things about each girl that just don't add up.

10 SYDNEY: Her Uncontrollable Anger

Sydney is always angry at everyone, even when she's not provoked by anything. As a result, she seems cold, rude, and mean. She isn't nice to anyone in the show except for her brother, Liam.

Where her anger comes from is unclear, though the second half of the season hints at connections with her father. Sydney even worries that she might follow in his footsteps.

9 DINA: Her Relationship With Brad

I Am Not Okay with This Netflix Season 1 Episode 5

Dina is smart and usually progressive. She's friends with Sydney because she genuinely likes her, not because of social status. The two even make fun of "people with pep", like football players and the cheerleaders who attend the games and pep rallies.

That being said, why she would date Brad makes no sense. Sydney realizes immediately that he's not a very nice guy and that he doesn't value Dina. Is Dina really so blinded by love that she doesn't notice? She seems to get over him pretty quickly, so this seems unlikely.

8 SYDNEY: She's In Love With Dina

Netflix

Dina is a nice girl, but nothing in the series suggests that Sydney is in love with her - apart from the show telling viewers that she is. Even less clear is the reason she loves Dina.

Though Sydney doesn't love Stanley romantically, it would make sense if she did. He's quirky and different, just like her. But Dina, while kind and compassionate, is... ordinary. But perhaps Sydney is attracted to the idea of normalcy and someone to take care of her since she lacks that at home.

7 DINA: Her Feelings Towards Sydney

When Sydney kisses Dina, she pulls back immediately, confused and startled. This makes sense, but it also seems that Dina had no intention of kissing herThe idea would never have occurred to her.

Yet later in the series, Dina reveals that she "didn't hate" the kiss. What this means for their relationship is unclear at the moment. But does this mean that Dina might be in love with Sydney, or just that she was surprised by the kiss, not repulsed?

6 SYDNEY: Leading Stanley On

At first, it seems that Sydney may really be interested in Stanley and she even sleeps with him, but in her narration she says that something doesn't feel right. She tells the audience that it's kind of awkward, and after this moment, Stanley tries to get closer to Sydney while she tries to avoid him. But when Stanley asks her to homecoming, Sydney says yes.

Stanley believes that she likes him back and that they're a couple until Sydney changes her mind and tells him to find another partner, which breaks his heart. Only in the last episode does she tell him that she doesn't like him that way. Why would she lead him on for so long while simultaneously trying to start something with Dina?

5 DINA: She's Oblivious Towards Sydney & Maggie's Relationship

Netflix

For someone so perceptive, Dina can be pretty ignorant sometimes. For instance, when she and Sydney have breakfast at her mom's diner, Maggie lets Dina go free of charge.

Sydney asks why she always makes her pay, and Maggie says it's because Dina's nicer to her and she likes her better. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, Dina laughs and leaves, but Sydney looks forlorn because it wasn't a joke. Dina never notices how strained their relationship is, yet it's so obvious. She's very perceptive and caring towards Sydney in other areas, so this oversight doesn't make sense.

4 SYDNEY: She Treats Stanley Badly

Stanley is only trying to support Sydney. He doesn't get too freaked out about her powers and, in fact, he tries to console her and help her figure them out.

After the supermarket, Stanley just assumes she was angry but he doesn't judge her. After all, he just wants her to feel okay. But Sydney doesn't ever treat Stanley with the kindness and love he deserves.

3 DINA: The Janitor Scene

While amusing, this scene doesn't make sense. After the show goes through all the effort of proving to viewers that Dina is clever, all of that hard work is undone when Dina does something silly like this.

When she needs the keys to access the principal's office, she starts striking seductive poses in front of the janitor. Even the janitor is confused. As he points out, why doesn't she just ask him normally? It seems the only purpose of this scene is to make viewers laugh, but it's strange for Dina to even behave this way in the first place.

2 SYDNEY: Her Powers

The origin of Sydney's powers remains unclear at the end of Season 1. If the show is renewed for a second season, its origins and purpose will likely be one of the main storylines.

At the moment, viewers don't even know what exactly her powers are because they seem to change every time she uses them. The only thing that makes sense is that they're connected to her emotions, which she doesn't have control over. But at the end of the season, Brad's head is the only thing to explode, which means she somehow refined her focus and channeled her ability.

1 DINA: Ignoring Sydney's Discomfort

Dina is a caring, compassionate, and supportive friend, but she doesn't always respect Sydney's boundaries. She seems to know about a lot of things going on in her best friend's life, and she can sense when something is wrong. For example, she knows Sydney is lying about the library footage.

So it makes no sense that Dina wouldn't sense Sydney's reluctance to wear makeup and revealing clothes to parties and the homecoming dance. She probably thinks she's helping her, but Sydney only feels awkward, uncomfortable, and vulnerable.
