5 Wrestlers We Want For John Cena At WrestleMania 39 (& 5 We Don't)

John Cena hasn't competed at WrestleMania in the past two years, with his last match at The Grandest Stage Of Them All taking place in cinematic fashion as he faced Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Funhouse match. However, fans have been eager to see him compete again, and there have already been reports that he could end up being involved in the show.

Considering that it is happening in Hollywood, Cena feels like an ideal person to bring in due to his movie career, especially since he can deliver at a high level inside the ring. Cena is an excellent performer, a main event name, and a great storyteller, which makes him an ideal opponent for certain people, while others should be avoided.

10 We Want: Steve Austin

WrestleMania is all about dream matches that nobody expects to happen, and John Cena facing Steve Austin certainly ticks that box. This is a main event encounter that people never expected but is now possible with Austin also being rumored to be participating at WrestleMania 39.

If both men are around on the same card, then Triple H has the chance to shock the wrestling world by throwing them against each other. This doesn't even need too much story involved, as the two names themselves will sell everyone on this.

9 Don't Want: The Rock

The Rock SmackDown return

Another legend that has been heavily rumored to be involved at WrestleMania next year is The Rock, as his name has mainly been associated with facing Roman Reigns. That is something that people want to see, and the same cannot be said for the leader of the Cenation and the People's Champion.

Cena and The Rock have already ticked that box with their twice-in-a-lifetime encounter. The two men have had a couple of iconic matches already, and a third would be a waste of time at this point.

8 We Want: Bobby Lashley

Bobby Lashley is someone that got the chance to work against John Cena very early on in his career, and while that was a good moment for him, Lashley wasn't the talent that he is today. Nowadays, the former WWE Champion is working at his peak, having truly understood the psychology of the business.

He has recently added a ton of aggression to his in-ring work and telling the story that he is now the man that is capable of competing against Cena could be an engaging storyline.

7 Don't Want: CM Punk

CM Punk is someone that could surprise the wrestling world once again before WrestleMania as he might end up making a WWE return due to the tensions surrounding his spell in AEW right now. Him returning to WWE for a match at 'Mania would be a huge deal that would draw a lot of attention.

However, if he was around to compete on the show then John Cena isn't the person to compete against. The two men feuded a lot during Punk's most recent run with the company, therefore this one can be avoided.

6 We Want: Austin Theory

Austin Theory

A match between Austin Theory and John Cena is something that has been teased online a lot over the past year since the younger wrestler got to the main roster. People have expected that this one would happen, and WrestleMania could be the time WWE pulls the trigger.

It would give Theory a huge moment to get himself back on track after failing to cash in the Money in the Bank briefcase, while it allows Cena to focus on working with someone with a long future.

5 Don't Want: The Miz

The Miz is someone who has worked at a high level for many years, and he has been able to work against John Cena in the past, including a WrestleMania main event. However, at this stage in his career, this isn't an encounter that people are excited to see again.

While Miz and Cena are both professionals who can easily hype up any storyline they're involved in, Cena's star power needs to be used more productively at this stage in his wrestling career.

4 We Want: Edge

Edge

While Edge is somebody that John Cena has competed against plenty of times, the idea of them having one final chapter to their story is something fans would be interested in. The reason is that they never got to have that before, and people thought this was impossible due to Edge's injury.

Now he is back, this could be an iconic WrestleMania dream match for people, especially since their iconic rivalry never had a match on The Grandest Stage Of Them All. Neither man has many matches left ahead of them, so making it happen here could be historic.

3 Don't Want: Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns Universal Champion Cropped

The last time fans saw John Cena competing inside the ring was at SummerSlam in 2021, and his opponent just so happened to be Roman Reigns. Because it was the most recent match that Cena has had, right now there isn't a desire for this one to happen again.

Reign has been knocking off as many people as possible throughout his run as WWE Champion, and fans want to see fresh storylines, not a repeat. He has already conquered Cena on this run, so it isn't a WrestleMania encounter that needs to happen.

2 We Want: Gunther

GUNTHER

Gunther is one of the top heels in the company right now, and he is the type of wrestler that would benefit massively from being able to get the rub from John Cena. The Hollywood star returning should be all about putting over a younger wrestler, and Gunther could be believable in defeating him.

If he remains the Intercontinental Champion then it would be a featured bout for that title, and an easy story to tell considering Cena has never won the title. There's no doubt they'd have a physical encounter that people would love to see, and these two men could have a great connection.

1 Don't Want: Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar is a wrestler that John Cena has faced many times, and the two of them have created some great moments against each other. Their rivalry has been iconic and the two men certainly brought the best out of each other with their hard-hitting styles at times.

However, even though Cena and the Beast can create magic inside the ring, that doesn't mean that it needs to happen again. Fans know what they will get from this match, but WWE would be smarter to put them against different opponents this time.
