9 Wrestlers Who Looked Terrible On Dark Side Of The Ring

When you name your show “Dark Side Of The Ring,” there’s a very good chance that just about every single topic you cover is going to be a bit rough to take for wrestling fans. But wrestling fans seemingly can’t have enough of any and all wrestling stories, no matter how dark they are.

Wrestling promotions have gotten into some serious legal trouble over the years.

That also doesn’t mean that the subject of each episode is the only thing that’s dark about Dark Side Of The Ring. Some of the fellow wrestlers commentating on the events don’t always come across smelling like roses, either.

9 WWE Roster Has Fun Slopping Sunny

Ribs On Sunny Were Borderline Harassment

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "Chris And Tammy."
  • Chris Candido And Tammy got their start with Jim Cornette in Smoky Mountain.
  • Candido's biggest run in WWE came during an angle with perennial jobber, Barry Horowitz.

The whole wrestling story of Chris Candido and Sunny is totally messed up and, thanks to the actions of Tammy Sytch, her life actions keep informing this story of the trajectory. They met in high school before gravity even noticed her and Chris was just a fan. He got into the business and took her along for the ride. Then, for lack of a better term, it was sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But no matter how terrible she would become, she was still just a young woman back when this story occurred. On an evening when her Bodydonnas were taking on The Godwinns, the entire roster did all sorts of things to contaminate the farmers’ Slop Buckets, which they then dumped all over the Diva in a horrible rib.

8 Ric Flair’s Plane Ride From Hell Antics

Naitch Being Naitch Shouldn't Be Acceptable Behavior

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "The Plane Ride From Hell."
  • Part of the original fall out from this episode was Flair's animated WWE Story Time segment that was cut out of subsequent airings.
  • Jim Ross made the decision to not work on Dark Side anymore after this show aired.

For all the talk old school wrestlers talk about “living their gimmick,” some guys should probably do their darnedest to live their gimmick without believing in their own gimmick. The Nature Boy built a legacy by claiming he was a kiss stealing, limousine riding, well…you know.

When Ric Flair made his entrance and walked that aisle, he always did so wearing the most lavish, beautiful robes.

But during the infamous Plane Ride From Hell, all sorts of wrestlers were getting rowdy and one flight attendant shared her story. Ric was doing more than just “stylin’ and profiling…”

7 Tommy Dreamer’s Defense Of Those Antics

Fans Love Ric Flair, But Tommy Was Out Of Line Defending Him

  • Tommy Dreamer nearly lost his Impact and Busted Open deals due to his comments made on the episode.
  • According to many who have since seen the episode, these stories are an amalgamation of several different plane rides.
  • Several wrestlers, including Dustin Rhodes and Scott Hall were let go immediately after the plane ride.

Oddly enough, “because he’s Ric Flair” has seemed to be a fairly acceptable defense of The Nature Boy, no matter his actions. Almost as if because his contributions to the ring are so great that, while not acceptable, his actions are forgivable. Tommy Dreamer certainly thought so. He also didn’t just come to Flair’s defense, he intimated that the flight attendant who came forward all these years later should have come forward sooner if she was this physically and emotionally distraught over her experience.

6 Abdullah The Butcher's Hardcore Style Caught Up To Him

Abby's Hepatitis Diagnosis Somehow Didn't Stop Him From Wrestling

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "Abdullah The Butcher: Legacy Of Blood"
  • Despite being protrayed as The Mad Man From Sudan, Abby was born and raised in Canada.
  • According to Mick Foley, Abby can fit poker chips in the scars on his forehead.

As “The Madman Of The Sudan,” Abdullah The Butcher made his name in the wrestling business by being a nasty hardcore brawler who has drawn blood - both his and his opponents - on every conceivable continent he could have. Towards the twilight of Abby’s career, he began working with and mentoring a wrestler named Hannibal. It was during this time that it was revealed Abby had contracted Hepatitis and possibly gave the disease to Hannibal. Even his friend Tony Atlas revealed that Abby would often use and reuse the same blades on himself and others.

5 Randy Savage Was Overprotective Of Miss Elizabeth

Some Stories Really Paint Randy As A Mad Man

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "The Match Made In Heaven."
  • Those who defend some of these stories suggest that there were no ladies' dressing rooms and Randy didn't want Liz dressing in the men's locker room.
  • The couple were married in 1984, shortly before they debuted in WWE.

Sometimes, the way a documentary team frames its story can make its subject look terrible. Sometimes they really were that terrible. While that’s pretty much the judging guide for how each of these entries and others should be judged, perhaps none more prevalent than The Macho Man Randy Savage when it came to his treatment of Miss Elizabeth.

'Macho Man' Randy Savage is one of the most charismatic and intense wrestlers in WWE history. Here are Savage's ten best matches in WWE, ranked.

According to the personalities who were telling the story from way back in season one’s “The Match Made In Heaven”, they kept suggesting that Savage wasn’t just overprotective of Liz, he’d supposedly keep her locked up in locker room and cleaning closets away from the rest of the boys.

4 Vince Russo On The Brawl For All

The Worst Idea In Wrestling History Was Designed To Humble One Ornery Texan

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "The Brawl For All."
  • Billy Gunn has claimed he knew his kayfabe brother was going to win the whole thing.
  • Bart Gunn's "prize" was getting knocked out by Butterbean in less than a minute at WrestleMania 15.

Generally regarded as the most divisive personality in all of the wrestling business, Vince Russo has seemingly been blackballed from the industry. While we all jokingly mock the endless amount of On-A-Pole matches (somehow there are no Festivus Pole matches), he also came up with a number of very dangerous ideas. The Brawl For All might be his most dangerous idea. By his own admission, he wanted to do the tournament to simply shut Bradshaw up. His entire flippant attitude during this episode is quite frankly disgusting when you realize that all their careers were basically ended all because Russo didn’t like JBL.

3 Shawn Michaels’ Sunny Days

More Sunny Stories, More Problems For Everyone Involved

  • The relationship between Shawn Michaels and Sunny was carried on behind Chris Candido's back.
  • According to stories in her book, Sunny would cross the border into Mexico to get Shawn and the rest of the Kliq all sorts of "medicine."
  • Sunny's behavior backstage put her at odds with several other managers, including Paul Bearer and Mr. Fuji.

In the ring, no matter what era of Shawn’s life he was in, fans generally acknowledge him as one of the GOATs. But in the nineties - Shawn Michaels, the person who was not a decent human being at all. He was all over Sunny, much like a lot of fans had wished they could be and vice versa. The problem, however, was that Sunny was off and on with Chris Candido and therefore constantly cheating on No Gimmicks Needed. According to Tammy in an interview, she wasn’t sure how much Chris actually knew. But according to close friends like Terri Runnels and Tom Prichard, he certainly knew since the whole locker room knew.

2 The British Bulldog’s Horrible Ribs

Dynamite And Jaques Rougeau Wanted To Hurt Each Other

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "The Dynamite Kid"
  • Shortly before his passing, Dynamite was reconnecting with his kids.
  • Davey Boy had trademarked The British Bulldog name after the team broke up.

When we fans think about Ribs in wrestling, generally they’re thought to be good-natured if not sometimes a little out there and even more gross. But The British Bulldogs weren’t gross or good-natured thanks to Dynamite’s intensity.

When The British Bulldog wasn't pushed as a singles star, he often found himself lumped into tag teams or stables, with mixed results.

If he thought a wrestler was being disrespectful, he would spike their drink with sleeping pills at the bar, for example. Once they were out, The Bulldogs headed into their hotel room to defecate in the wrestler’s bag and shave their eyebrows.

1 Marty Jannetty Thinks He's God's Amusement Toy

The Former Rocker Doesn't Seem To Know What Is Shoot Or Kayfabe

  • Dark Side episode to watch - "The World According To Marty Jannetty."
  • Shawn Michaels has credited a lot of his early success to teaming with Marty.
  • Plenty of Jannetty's stories could have criminal consequences if ever revealed to be true.

There’s Dark Sides Of The Ring, and there’s Marty Jannetty. Has anyone ever self-sabotaged themselves and bobsledded towards these levels of infamy more than the former Rocker? While plenty of fans recognize Shawn as one of the very best, HBK has said in the past that he learned from Marty - imagine if that’s true and Marty’s actions didn’t do such harm to his career. His Dark Side Of The Ring isn’t going to help those perceptions either. We’ve heard plenty of stories - regarding possibly dating his stepdaughter and murdering someone - more often than not, it’s always Marty who is causing himself more harm than good.
