All Of Us Are Dead: What Happened To Eun-ji?

All Of Us Are Dead likes to keep a lot of things open to fan speculation. One such example is halfbie Eun-ji's mysterious disappearance.

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for All Of Us Are Dead.

It's not entirely clear what happened to Eun-ji (Oh Hye-soo) after she's last seen in All Of Us Are DeadNetflix's hit Korean drama is equal parts a coming-of-age tale and zombie horror show, focusing on a group of students from Hyosan High School after a deadly, rage-inducing virus breaks out. The show tackles survival and the tenacity of the human spirit even in the light of systemic evils, and nothing so clearly exemplifies these themes as the B-plot with severely bullied teenager Min Eun-ji. Jaded and depressed from the horrible mistreatment she receives from her classmates, Eun-ji slowly becomes more vengeful and dangerous. In episode 4, she becomes a "halfbie," a half human-half zombie entity earlier established as one of All Of Us Are Dead's multiple zombie virus variants.

After escaping Hyosan High, she's hit by a bus and taken into a rescue camp. There, she finds fellow bullied classmate Kim Chul-soo (Ahn Ji-ho) and eats him. Guards catch her and take her into an isolated lab for further study, learning from her about other virus variants and behavioral qualities exhibited by the infected. Strapped down on a bed, she and a fully-zombified soldier experience bewildering, agonizing experiments. Not long after it's determined by the experiment conductors that the infected react to 24hz of frequency, Eun-ji's bed is empty and being wiped down by a lab technician.

The show never answers why Eun-ji leaves, especially considering that the experimenters didn't require a vacancy. Even more confusing is the fact that the zombified family members of Lee Byeong-chan (Kim Byung-chul) are taken in for experimentation after Eun-ji's bed is vacated, as shown in All Of Us Are Dead's ending. There are a few possibilities as to what happened to Eun-ji. First, she could have been killed off by the experimenters. Second, she could have been taken to another location to be further experimented on. Finally, if she was kept alive but not concealed for experimentation purposes, she could have been taken to a special quarantine location away from the uninfected.

Understanding possible motives for each option gives clues to their plausibility. To kill Eun-ji off, the experimenters would have to determine her to be better off dead than alive. Not only is this theory heartbreaking, but it's made more unlikely when the experimenters clearly have so much left to learn about the virus. However, she threatens experimenters with her human flesh cravings. Even though she's isolated, she could infect lab technicians or find a way to escape. If Eun-ji does end up returning to All Of Us Are Dead season 2, it would be interesting to see where the lab technicians moved her, and why. She may have been taken to a more sophisticated facility, like the KDCA. Maybe the government set up a larger facility for zombie experimentation and took Eun-ji there.

Considering that All Of Us Are Dead uses fake-out deaths and never confirms that Eun-ji dies, it's possible that she'll come back. If nothing else, season 2 will likely explain what happened to her, even if she was in fact killed. The creators of the show purposefully included multiple variants and open-ended ideas for a second season, and Eun-ji's disappearance seems to be purposefully ambiguous. Where she went to, what happened to her, and why the show answers none of this all remain to be seen.
