Arn Anderson and Ole Anderson were a legendary tag team, known for a hard-nosed style. While neither man was the body builder sort whose style of physique would grow popular in the 1980s, both looked strong and solid, not to mention with full beards that added years to them even when they were on the younger side. The pairing was billed as one of the latter incarnations of the Minnesota Wrecking Crew, and were later positioned as charter members of the original version of The Four Horsemen faction.

While many fans and critics alike consider The Four Horsemen the greatest stable in pro wrestling history, other factions were arguably better.

If fans are confused about the nature of their familial relationship, though, it’s for good reason. At different times, they were billed as brothers or cousins when, in reality, the two did not actually have a familial relationship, nor did they even fully get along in real life.

On February 26, 2024, the legendary Ole Anderson tragically passed away at age 81. His legacy in professional wrestling runs deep as a member of the Four Horsemen. Alongside Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, and Arn Anderson, they were the original incarnation of the group. They went on to achieve legendary status in the world of professional wrestling. In addition, many fans might not know about the kayfabe relationship between Arn and Ole. The two were not related, but they grew incredibly close overtime.

The Anderson Kayfabe Wrestling Family

They Did Not Know Each Other Before Working Together

  • Gene Anderson was the original pioneer of the Anderson Family.
  • Lars Anderson later joined Gene.
  • Ole Anderson was later introduced into the family.

Neither Ole nor Arn Anderson were actually involved when the lineage of kayfabe Anderson relatives started teaming up. As chronicled by Last Word on Sports, Gene Anderson was the wrestling pioneer for the fictional family, who trained under Verne Gagne for the AWA, before being joined by his storyline big brother Lars Anderson. Gene would end up bridging the gap to team with Ole Anderson, who did believably look like his brother.

From Ole’s recounting in a shoot interview for The Smart Marks, he actually wasn’t very familiar with young Arn’s work before he was assigned to work with him, knowing him mostly as an enhancement worker from when they’d crossed paths working in the southern territories. He did concede that Arn had similar mannerisms to Gene, though.

The kayfabe family actually included Ric Flair—not as a proper Anderson, but as a cousin to them, which set them up to work together en route to eventually launching The Four Horsemen with him. There were other family member storylines for short runs and on smaller stages. C.W. Anderson was among the more noteworthy additions down the road. Additionally, current WWE Superstar Karl Anderson was kayfabe relative, too, but distanced himself from that angle before long to blaze his own trail.

Interestingly enough, the next generation of Andersons would have a higher level of family fidelity to them as Gene’s son Brad and Ole’s son Bryant each had runs in wrestling. Most recently, Arn’s son Brock has appeared for AEW. Of course, counting Flair as a kayfabe cousin, his real children Charlotte, David, and Reid have also fed the family tree.

The Real-Life Relationship Between Arn And Ole Anderson

They Were Related In Kayfabe

Ole Anderson
  • Ole and Arn Anderson were not actually related in real life.
  • They did not have a great relationship at first.
  • Ole and Arn had differing views on Ric Flair's work in the ring.

Despite fans of a certain era taking it for granted that Arn and Ole Anderson were related, at least in storyline, and presumably close for how much time they spent working together, the duo don’t actually seem to have such a warm relationship. Fans got some hints as to Arn’s disposition toward Ole in the WWE-produced documentary Ric Flair & The Four Horsemen when Double A was a bit callous in discussing that Ole couldn’t cut it in the group. The Enforcer walked the line of kayfabe throughout his commentary for the documentary, but spoke in more straightforward fashion about his kayfabe relative on an episode of his podcast (h/t Wrestling-News.net). He referenced Ole having a specific vision for presenting wrestling realistically and that he would get on Arn’s case for taking “goofy” bumps, and took issues with Ric Flair’s lack of realism too.

The Four Horsemen is arguably the top stable in wrestling history. However, not every version was great and some were downright bad.

Ole also famously chastised Flair in 1993, when Ole was in charge of bookingWCW and The Nature Boy returned from WWE, fresh off a loss to Mr. Perfect. Ole complained that Flair had lost all his heat by taking that loss, whereas Arn was a Flair loyalist at the time and clearly sided with The Dirtiest Player in the Game that he hadn’t done anything wrong.

In the end, the biggest legacy Arn and Ole Anderson left behind together was from their work as a tag team. They actually only won one tag title together—Ole winning his share of regional tag titles with an array of partners before Arn, while Arn earned his share of gold with different partners afterward. Nonetheless, that win happened in Georgia Championship Wrestling--a precursor to WCW--the accomplishment had some historical staying power. That’s especially so for the duo teaming up to form half of the original Four Horsemen stable.

Arn carried forward the hard-nosed Anderson family style to be the more brutish half of his decorated team with Tully Blanchard in particular, continuing to anchor the Horsemen in addition to a quality WWE run.

From The Holly Cousins' angle, to The Smoking Gunns, Paul and Katie Lea Burchill and many others, kayfabe family members are a big part of pro wrestling. The Andersons weren’t the first or last storyline relatives, but hold a place in history for their time teaming together, despite the fact that they didn’t get along all that well in real life.
