Bartolo Colon Becomes Winningest Latin American Born Pitcher In MLB History
Texas Rangers pitcher Bartolo Colon did something that no other Latin American born pitcher had ever done in the long history of Major League Baseball. He won his 246 career game. His career record stands at 246-186.
Colon pitched seven innings in the game Tuesday night, giving up four runs on eight hits. He also struck out one and didn't walk a batter in the Rangers' 11-4 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners. And Colon even registered the last out of his final inning of the night with a nice grab of a comeback line drive off the bat of Dee Gordon.
The start last night was his sixth since getting his 245th win which had put him in a tie with the Nicaraguan-born pitcher, Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez atop the all-time win list for Latina born pitchers. So, it took him a little while to break the tie, but it happened last night.
"It was a long journey, but it finally came and it feels good," Colon said. And his teammates were happy for him also. ESPN quoted Adrian Beltre saying, "It took a while to get it, but I'm proud of him. He's a great, awesome teammate."

When it comes to Latin American pitchers, Colon can sometimes be forgotten among names such as Pedro Martinez (219-100), Dennis Martinez (245-193) and even Felix Hernandez (168-123) (who he beat last night to get the record-breaking win). But one shouldn't underestimate Colon or his great career.
Born in the Dominican Republic, 45-year-old Colon's "long journey" started way back in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians. In the last 21 years, Colon has played for 12 different teams — one of which was the Montreal Expos (who Dennis Martinez also played for). Colon has been an all-star four times and he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2005 as a member of the Anaheim Angels.
Colon also holds a few other MLB records you might not have known about, including:
-At the age of 42 in 2016, he became the oldest player to hit his first career home run.
-He is the oldest active player in baseball
-He is the last active player in the league to have played for the Montreal Expos.
-Colon and his teammate Beltre are the only two active players in the league to have played since the 1990s.
