A bogus national anthem from controversial film Borat has left Kazakstan's shooting team shocked and demanding an apology after it was mistakenly played at a medal ceremony.

The parody was played during a championships medal ceremony in Kuwait, the BBC has reported.

Coach Anvar Yunusmetov told Kazakh news agency Tengrinews the incident happened when gold medallist Maria Dmitrienko was on the podium.

"She got up on to the pedestal and they played a completely different anthem, offensive to Kazakhstan,'' he is reported saying.

The mix-up happened after organisers downloaded the wrong song from the internet by mistake, he said.

A YouTube video of the ceremony shows gold medallist Ms Dmitrienko showing no emotion during the anthem and then smiling as it ends.

Tournament organisers also got the Serbian national anthem wrong, Mr Yunusmetov, reportedly said.

The medal ceremony is understood to have been later rerun with the real anthem.

In the song from the 2006 film featuring UK comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Kazakhstan is praised for its potassium exports and for having clean prostitutes.

The film caused outrage in Kazakstan and was banned in the country.
