Cody Rhodes’ Story Of His Worst Match Ever Is Hilarious
Quick Links
Cody Rhodes is currently one of the most over babyfaces on WWE’s roster, undergoing a huge boost following his return to the company in 2022. Even with him now having a resume of World Titles (such as the ROH and NWA World Championships), and an array of show-stealing matches over the years, even he isn’t immune to having a bad night, and being a part of a disastrous match. Rhodes has re-told the story of the night in which he was a part of the worst match of his career, and it is quite a comical one to look back on, especially with Rhodes’ light-hearted view of how everything went down.
Cody Rhodes Explained The Story Of His Worst Match At The Starrcast Event
At the 2018 Starrcast event (per the GrayTheIdiot YouTube Channel), Cody Rhodes was on the stage and told the story of one of, if not the very worst match of his career. His retelling of the story was fantastic, with him having the comedic timing down perfectly. The match in question took place back in 2011, on the June 17th edition of Friday Night SmackDown, at a time in which the brand was going through one of its worst stages due to it being taped and having a severe lack in star power at times.

Ahead of the Capital Punishment PPV which was coming just two days later, Cody Rhodes teamed up with Ted DiBiase and Wade Barrett, taking on Daniel Bryan, Sin Cara, and Ezekiel Jackson. This was done to try and build up the Intercontinental Championship bout between Barrett and Jackson, the two former members of The Corre. Rhodes explained that Jackson was supposed to be the focus of this match, with him intended to get the hot tag late in the match to save the day, and pick up the big win for his team, adding to his momentum ahead of his title challenge at the upcoming show. However, things didn’t quite go to plan.
Ted DiBiase Forgot To Kick Out During A Six-Man Tag Team Match On SmackDown
The match intended to carry on for two segments, lasting through a commercial break for a supposed fairly lengthy encounter. Everything started off basic enough, with some back and forth action here and there. Fans may have expected that it was Sin Cara who led this match into disaster, given the track record the original version of Sin Cara had with botches during the first year of his run, but it was surprisingly not he who caused the match to end badly.

Daniel Bryan was delivering some of his signature offense to Ted DiBiase Jr, including his running dropkicks into the corner. He hit one of these, and attempted a pinfall. The entire arena expected DiBiase to kick out, and for the match to eventually reach its next gear. However, it looked as though DiBiase simply forgot to kick out, with the referee even delaying his three count before letting his hand hit the mat and calling for the bell by the time DiBiase kicked out of the move. Before anything could be rectified, the babyfaces were awarded the victory, and Jackson didn't even getting into the ring.
Whilst on the outside, Rhodes explained that going through his mind was to call an audible, with he and his fellow heels attacking the babyfaces to at least prolong the segment. However, before he could communicate this, Barrett had already stormed to the back in anger. Both he and DiBiase then went to the back as well to face the music and potential wrath of Vince McMahon.
Ted DiBiase’s Backstage Outburst Was Hilarious And Surreal
When they arrived, Rhodes met eyes with an irate McMahon, even though he wasn’t at fault. DiBiase then came thundering around the corner, and as Rhodes put it, without any fear at all. He stared straight at McMahon, and shouted “Where is that referee, he was trying f*ck on me!” The delivery of this line from Rhodes during his retelling was fantastic, although in an interview with WrestleZone, DiBiase disputed the exact details of this tale. The awkwardness and the absurdity of the situation then caused McMahon to simply just put his headset back on and continue with the show.

To make the entire thing even more silly and comical, prior to the match Rhodes was approached by Michael Hayes, who asked Rhodes what they were set to do in the match, to which Rhodes replied that they were going to tear the house down. Well, it was a demolition job for sure, but not in a good way. Although no one seemed to face any repercussions of this match, DiBiase Jr didn’t ever really receive any sort of push following this, with him dropping down the card over the rest of his WWE career.
