Ryan Reynolds' movie introduces a new video game world, but does Free Guy have a post-credits scene setting up future films - and, if so, how many? Franchise filmmaking has become par for the course for Hollywood over the last two decades, and studios are turning to all sorts of established IP to launch their next big blockbuster series, including video games. While studios have struggled to get major game-based franchises off the ground, Free Guy goes in an entirely different direction by telling a new story set within an original video game world.
In Free Guy, Reynolds stars as the non-player character Guy in the fictional open world shooter called Free City. He's joined by co-stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery and Utkarsh Ambudkar, who play various real-world people involved in the game or non-player characters. The Free Guy trailers have even shown off Dude, a bigger and buffer version of Guy (with bodybuilder Aaron W. Reed portraying Dude's body). After a handful of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Free Guy is being released in theaters by 20th Century Studios.
With Free Guy hitting theaters around the world, viewers may wonder if the film has any stingers or button scenes during or after the credits. Free Guy does NOT have a post-credits scene or any additional content at the middle or end of the credits. Though it's always worth watching the credits to get an idea of who was involved in the film, moviegoers shouldn't expect any extra scenes with Free Guy.
Of course, just because a movie doesn't have a post-credits scene doesn't necessarily mean it will be a one-off. The Free Guy movie reviews have been extremely positive so far, which may translate to a warm reception from audiences. One big question mark, though, is what the film's box office gross will be. Free Guy is a theatrical exclusive, so audiences interested in the original film will have to check it out in theaters. But with COVID cases surging in the U.S., it's unclear how much Free Guy will earn domestically, let alone internationally.
All that's to say, Free Guy could be either a franchise starter or a one-off - only time will tell. There are a number of factors that will determine whether Free Guy receives a sequel, from its box office tally to whether the creatives have any ideas of how to further the story. At least the movie isn't hamstrung by a post-credits scene teasing a sequel that may never come to fruition. So moviegoers checking out Free Guy can enjoy the film for what it is - and shouldn't expect a post-credits scene.
