Drew McIntyre Promises To End Goldberg's Streak At The Royal Rumble

Drew McIntyre will defend his WWE Championship against Hall of Famer Goldberg at next Sunday's Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

This will mark the first ever showdown between the two superstars, as well as Goldberg's first match since WrestleMania 36, when he dropped the Universal Championship to Braun Strowman.

The buildup for this match started on the "Legends Night" edition of Monday Night Raw. Goldberg appeared at the end of the show and confronted McIntyre for disrespecting the legends in attendance that night.

McIntyre had to miss the following show after testing positive for COVID-19, but he accepted Goldberg's challenge via video call.

The WWE Champion talked about his upcoming match with Goldberg in an interview with Riju Dasgupta of Sportskeeda. During the conversation, McIntyre vowed to end one of Goldberg's more impressive streaks next Sunday (transcriptions via Sportskeeda's Vatsal Rathod):

"No matter what anyone might think or anyone might say about Goldberg, look at what's happened every time he's returned to the company. He keeps himself in shape, he's an animal, he's explosive, he ran through Brock Lesnar, won the Universal Championship, he ran through The Fiend and won the Universal Championship.

He's on a new streak where he comes back to the company and he wins the title and so I'm looking to end that new streak he's on right now. He comes back, he can fight me at the rumble but with all the respect in the world for him, and it hurts me to say it, but Goldberg I'm going to have to kick your head off and beat you because you ain't winning my title. I'm ending the streak."

If Goldberg defeats McIntyre, he'll have set two impressive and historic feats. A victory would make him the oldest WWE Champion at 54 years and 35 days of age; Vince McMahon has held the record for 22 years at 54 years and 21 days of age.

Goldberg would also become the first superstar to win all three world titles in the company - the WWE, Universal and World Heavyweight Championships.

This marquee match will set the stage for the main event scene at WrestleMania 37. For what it's worth, Goldberg and John Cena are reportedly "nearly locks" to compete at the Show of Shows on the Apr. 10-11 weekend.

Goldberg vs. McIntyre Will Be A Memorable Match

One way or another, this match will go down as one of the most memorable in recent Royal Rumble memory. Either Goldberg wins another marquee championship at the age of 54, or McIntyre's stardom grows even more with a victory over one of the all time greats. It's safe to assume that the winner of this match will carry the WWE Championship into WrestleMania, so the stakes are extremely high here.
