Every Lucha Underground Champion, Ranked From Worst To Best

Lucha Underground was a unique wrestling promotion that operated from 2014-2018. Unlike most wrestling companies, it was not a weekly wrestling promotion year-round but was instead a seasonal show with a set amount of pre-recorded shows for each season. These shows featured more than just wrestling.

The Lucha Underground world included mysticism, horror, and even had wrestlers killing each other. There were resurrections, reincarnations, and even FBI agents undercover within the temple to bring down the nefarious owner of the company. Along the way, there were a total of nine world champions in the company's history, and here is a look at all nine, from weakest to strongest.

9 Jake Strong

The last Lucha Underground Champion only held the title for less than a day. That is because Jake Strong won the belt on the final episode of Season 4. Most fans will recognize Jake Strong as the man formerly known as Jack Swagger in WWE and is currently competing in AEW as Jake Hager. He would rank much higher on this list if he were champion longer than just the final episode of the entire series. As it is, he has done nothing to prove he was worthy in Lucha Underground.

8 Marty The Moth

Marty the Moth was the most unlikely Lucha Underground Champion in the company's history. His character started as a fan who interfered in a match on TV. He then got his chance to wrestle and lost his first match to Prince Puma and his second in an intergender match to Sexy Star.

He then went crazy and stalked and tortured Sexy Star, before he finally got his chance in Season 4 for the title. He won the Gift of the Gods Championship, cashed it in, and beat Pentagon Dark. His reign was a little over one month before he lost it back to Pentagon Dark.

7 Sexy Star

Sexy Star broke barriers in Lucha Underground. Long before Impact Wrestling put its world title on a female competitor in Tessa Blanchard, Lucha Underground had Sexy Star win the world title. She had competed against men since the start of her career in the company and held her own.

Sexy Star had a lot of success early on, and then she got a chance at the world title in the third Aztec Warfare match. She won it by last eliminating Mil Muertes and showed that she could hang with the men. However, she lost the title one week later to Johnny Mundo.

6 Fenix

Rey Fenix is one of the best Luchador wrestlers in the world today, proving this by winning several titles around the world. He was a multi-time champion in Mexico and was a titleholder in Impact Wrestling with his brother Pentagon Jr. as the Lucha Bros. In Lucha Underground, he worked as Fenix, and in Season 2, he won the world title. He was the Gift of the Gods Champion and cashed it in to beat Mil Muertes for the title. He lost it one week later to Matanza Cueto.

5 Johnny Mundo

Johnny Mundo

The world knows Johnny Mundo as John Morrison from WWE. He has had a lot of success outside of WWE, winning the world title in Impact Wrestling and Lucha Underground both. In Lucha Underground, Mundo came in and beat Sexy Star for the title in Season 2. Mundo was a successful and fighting champion, and he held the title for almost a year, winning it on an episode in November 2016 and not losing it until a Season 3 episode in October 2017.

4 Matanza Cueto

Matanza Cueto was a monster in Lucha Underground, literally. Dario Cueto was the promoter and owner of Lucha Underground and ran things his way. Matanza was his brother, kept in a cage with a mask on, and used to hurt people who got in Dario's way.

In Season 2, Dario let Matanza out, and he went and destroyed the Lucha Underground Champion, Fenix, beating him for the title. He held the belt until Sexy Star won it in an Aztec Warfare match on an episode that aired eight months later. For those who don't know, NJPW star Jeff Cobb played Matanza Cueto.

3 Mil Muertes

Mil Muertes was an almost unstoppable Lucha Underground Champion in Season 1 of the series. He was a monster among Luchadores, and he beat the first-ever Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma at Ultima Lucha 1 in August 2015. He went on to hold the title until Season 2, where he lost it to Fenix, who cashed in his Gift of the Gods Championship for the opportunity. Only one man had a longer title reign than Muertes with this world championship belt.

2 Prince Puma

Prince Puma

Prince Puma was the first man ever to hold the Lucha Underground Championship. When the program started, it was Puma that the show pushed as the first significant babyface star. Konnan brought him in as a mystery wrestler, and he proved to be the most exciting man on the roster.

Puma won the title in a 20-person elimination Aztec Warfare match and held the title for 196 days before losing it to Mil Muertes. Prince Puma won it a second time in Season 3 by beating Johnny Mundo before losing it immediately to Pentagon Dark. Prince Puma is better known as WWE superstar Ricochet.

1 Pentagon Dark

The most dominant world champion in Lucha Underground history is the man known in the company as Pentagon Dark. Now wrestling in AEW as Pentagon Jr., the man was scary in Lucha Underground. He had a gimmick of breaking his opponent's arm in matches, and no one wanted to step into the ring with him.

Pentagon won the Lucha Underground Championship from Prince Puma, forcing him to retire, before holding it for 622 days. He then won it again from Marty the Moth before losing the gold on the final episode of Lucha Underground to Jake Strong.
