Every Major Family Tree Explained (Including Korra)
Family plays an important role in both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Here's a breakdown of the major family trees.
Here's a breakdown of every major family tree in Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The bending world of Avatar: The Last Airbender was first introduced to viewers in 2005. The animated series focused primarily on the story of Aang, a powerful airbender who awoke after being frozen for 100 years to discover the world was largely under the control of the Fire Nation.
Throughout the three-season story of Avatar: The Last Airbender, viewers saw Aang master all four types of bending to end the war. He teams up with Southern Water Tribe members Sokka and Katara right away. Aang eventually finds other allies in Toph Beifong and the unlikely alliance with Zuko, the prince of the Fire Nation. The story introduced a variety of supporting characters, but many of the main characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender were related in some way. With bloodlines helping decide who rules in most cases, families play a big role in the narrative - while the show also has overarching themes about family.
Since the entirety of Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place over the course of a year, viewers had to wait for The Legend of Korra to get some answers on what happened to the young main characters next. The Legend of Korra takes place decades after Avatar and shares some updates on where Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph's lives went. But, the show also features an array of new characters and families. With The Legend of Korra running for four seasons, it helped expand the mythology and world in several ways. Fans have wondered over the years just how all the families are tied together, and superfan Carlotta4th put in the leg work to assemble a complete family tree for the show. Here are the most important family trees in both shows, showing just how connected the stories are.
Aang's Family Tree
Aang is at the forefront of Avatar: The Last Airbender's story, but his family tree is not explored. The show never revealed who his parents are, only that he was raised by Gyatso, an airbending master at the Southern Air Temple. Even though Aang's biological past is unknown, he is technically the Avatar reincarnate, and thus related to all previous Avatars like Roku, Kyoshi, and Wan. These connections even mean Aang and Zuko are related. The Legend of Korra showed what happened to Aang's bloodline as he grew older and married Katara. The two of them had three kids, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. Only Tenzin married, and he and Pema had four children: Jinora, Ikki Meelo, and Rohan. But, Aang never met his grandkids since he died before they were all born.
Fire Lord Family Tree
The Fire Lord bloodline is a rich one in The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra's respective stories. Several Fire Lords ruled the Fire Nation before Sozin, but he is the first known leader of this bloodline. Fire Lord Sozin married and had one son, Azulon. As Fire Lord, Azulon married Ilah and had two sons, Iroh and Ozai. The bloodline continued with both sons having families of their own. Iroh married an unknown woman and had a son, Lu Ten, but he died during battle. Ozai married a woman named Ursa, and they had two children together, Zuko and Azula. It isn't known what happened to Azula after The Last Airbender, but Zuko married an unknown woman and had a daughter, Izumi. She became the next Fire Lord and married an unknown man. Izumi then gave birth to Iroh, who was named after his great uncle.
Roku's Family Tree
Avatar Roku is in a similar boat as Aang as he is technically related to all past versions of the Avatar, but his actual bloodline runs deeper than this. Roku married a woman named Ta Min and had a daughter named Rina. She eventually married a man named Jinzuk and had one daughter, Ursa. She married Fire Lord Ozai and is the mother of Zuko and Azula. When Ursa was banished from the Fire Nation, though, she later remarried. She and her new husband, Ikem/Noren, had a daughter named Kiyi.
Sokka and Katara's Family Tree
The bloodline that brought Sokka and Katara into the Avatar: The Last Airbender world comes from the Southern Water Tribe. Their grandmother is Kanna, and she married an unnamed man who is their grandfather. They had one known son in Hakoda. The Southern Water Tribe's future leader married Kya, and they had Sokka and Katara. The Legend of Korra never explores what happens to Sokka, so it is unknown if he helped keep the bloodline alive. There are theories that Sokka is Varrick's father, though. However, Katara married Aang and had three kids together. Unlike Aang, Katara was able to meet their four grandchildren.
Korra's Family Tree
Sometime later, the bloodline leading the Southern Water Tribe changed. The leader of the Southern Tribe had two sons, Tonraq and Unalaq. Tonraq married another waterbender, Senna, and they had Korra. As is the case with all Avatars, Korra is technically related to all other past incarnations of the Avatar. The Legend of Korra ends her story, though, before showing what becomes of Korra and her family tree. Her uncle Unalaq did have a family with his wife, Malina. They raised twin waterbenders, Desna and Eska.
Beifong Family Tree
Lao is the eldest known member of the Beifong family. He married Poppy, and together they raised their daughter Toph. She eventually had two daughters, but they have two different fathers. Lin Beifong is her first daughter and came from Toph's relationship with a man named Kanto. Toph later was romantically involved with an unknown man and had her second daughter, Suyin. While Lin never married or had children, Suyin did. She married Baatar, and they had five children together: Baatar Jr., Huan, Opal, and the twins Wei and Wing.
Sato Family Tree
Asami Sato's family tree isn't that well explored in The Legend of Korra. She is the only daughter of Hiroshi Sato and Yasuko. Asami spent most of her life being raised by her dad following her mother's death when Asami was just six years old. The death of Yasuko is what spurned Hiroshi to create anti-bending technology and later join Amon's Equalists.
Mako and Bolin's Family Tree
The bloodline responsible for Mako and Bolin can be traced back to the couple Yin and Bohai. They had two sons together, Chow and San. Chow married a woman named LiLing and had three children: Chow Jr., Tu, and Meng-Meng. San married a woman named Naoki, and they brought Mako and Bolin into the world. But when San and Naoki both died when the boys were young, Mako suddenly found himself responsible for raising his younger brother.
Yakone's Family Tree
One of the villainous families introduced in The Legend of Korra is that of Yakone. The powerful waterbender married an unnamed woman from the Northern Water Tribe and started a family. They raised two sons, Noatak and Tarrlok, who still had waterbending abilities despite Aang stripping Yakone of his bending. Noatak becomes the Equalist's leader under the guise of Amon, while Tarrlok fought against the Anti-Bending Revolution. This led to the Tarrlock committing a murder-suicide that took Noatak's life too, which should've ended the bloodline.
