Rey Mysterio will go down in history as one of the greatest Cruiserweights to grace a wrestling ring. Mysterio comes from a legendary family with a rich lineage and Mysterio has certainly made a mark in the land of the giants. Amongst Mysterio's career highlights are three WWE World Title reigns to his name, a couple of Intercontinental Titles, and he is the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble match amongst other accolades.

Nonetheless, at SummerSlam, Mysterio has often found himself opening up the show on several occasions. Some moan about being in the first match of the night but it's not that bad of a position as you are trusted to set the tone for the show and can have a "top that" attitude. Mysterio has competed in several title matches at SummerSlam and battled with former World Champions in some remarkable bouts.

An all-Cruiserweight team comprised of Rey Mysterio and WWE Tag Team Champions Billy Kidman and Paul London faced off with Cruiserweight Champion Spike Dudley and The Dudleys in a six-man tag team match to open up SummerSlam 2004. Spike was thriving in his new role as a heel, and he bossed his brothers Bubba Ray and D-Von.

Mysterio brought his explosive style to the match and he collaborated well with Kidman. The Master of the 619 crashed and burned on the barricade which removed him from the equation. Ultimately, The Dudleys planted Kitman with 3D which allowed Spike to secure the victory.

Kane was a man on a mission as he was chasing after the person that put his brother The Undertaker in a vegetative state. Nonetheless, The Devil's Favorite Demon blamed Rey Mysterio and Mysterio was seeking his third World Heavyweight Championship reign as he collided with Kane at the 2010 iteration of SummerSlam.

This was an average match in fairness with Kane dominating with the size and strength advantage. Mysterio hit the 619 on Kane but the reigning champ put his knees up to block the frog splash. Kane delivered a thunderous Chokeslam to retain the World Heavyweight Title. However, Undertaker emerged after the match, and he reignited his feud with Undertaker as Kane was revealed as the one who put The Phenom in a vegetative state.

Rey Mysterio isn't a stranger when it comes to channeling his inner superhero, and he did just that in his Intercontinental Championship match with The Miz at SummerSlam 2012. Mysterio sported a Batman outfit which definitely suited him.

As far as the match was concerned, it was a competitive back and forth match. Ultimately, Mysterio failed to recapture the Intercontinental Championship with The Awesome One launching Rey onto the top turnbuckle and hitting the Skull Crushing Finale for the win.

Chavo Guerrero cost Rey Mysterio the World Heavyweight Championship at The Great American Bash 2006. The two former Cruiserweight Champions collided in a grudge match at SummerSlam with Mysterio looking to get some revenge on Chavo.

As expected, their chemistry together was second to none and they had a very good match to get SummerSlam off to a flying start. However, Chavo's auntie Vickie made her presence felt at ringside and she was pleading for both of them to stop fighting. Nonetheless, the seeds were planted in her alliance with Chavo as she pulled the ropes which caused Rey to fall. Chavo took advantage and prevailed with a jaw-dropping Frog Splash.

6 Rey Mysterio, John Morrison & Kofi Kingston Vs. Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth & The Miz - 2011

Opening matches and Rey Mysterio seem to go hand in hand. At SummerSlam 2011, Mysterio teamed up with John Morrison and Kofi Kingston, and they went up against the heel trio of Alberto Del Rio, Truth, and The Miz.

Mysterio was full of confidence as 24 hours later on Raw, he had a shot at reclaiming the WWE Championship. This was a fast-paced match with most of the spotlight on Mysterio. It was a superb battle with Mysterio getting the all-important victory, taking momentum into his mandatory WWE Title match, which was against Del Rio who cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on CM Punk.

SummerSlam 2007 was all about returns with Rey Mysterio returning from a serious knee injury and Triple H coming back from a torn quadriceps. Nonetheless, for the second consecutive year, Mysterio collided with Chavo Guerrero.

The Ultimate Underdog came out in full Silver Surfer gear with his body painted silver. Although by the end of the match, Mysterio's paint was almost removed from his body. Nevertheless, they topped their encounter from a year prior with Mysterio gaining revenge in the latest installment of their rivalry.

Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler tore the house down in one of the best Intercontinental Championship matches in the history of SummerSlam. Mysterio and Ziggler are two excellent workers and they opened up SummerSlam 2009 which set the tone for a remarkable pay-per-view.

There were several near falls and fans were heavily invested in this match. The Showoff looked like a man who was desperate as he really wanted the first piece of singles silverware in his WWE career. Ultimately, Mysterio retained the Intercontinental Championship with a superb hurricanrana from the top rope, and Ziggler sold it like a million bucks.

3 The Mysterios Vs. The Usos - 2021

For the first time since 2012, Rey Mysterio competing at SummerSlam and he teamed up with his son Dominik, who was celebrating one year from his debut. The Mysterios were looking to regain the SmackDown Tag Team Championship in an outstanding titular bout against The Usos at SummerSlam 2021.

The Usos dominated the early exchanges of the match and Jey whipped Dominik into the ring-post on the outside. Rey was isolated for large portions, and The Usos nailed Rey with a double kick to the face. Ultimately, Jey sealed the deal with his patented Uso Splash ensuring the titles remained in The Bloodline camp.

There's a reason why SummerSlam 2002 is often regarded as the greatest SummerSlam of all time, and it's because of matches like Rey Mysterio battling Kurt Angle. Moreover, SummerSlam 2002 was also Mysterio's debut outing on a WWE pay-per-view.

The match only lasted nine minutes but the action was enthralling from start to finish. Mysterio's aerial moves aided him to a certain degree but The Olympic Gold Medalist was in no mood to mess about and he forced Mysterio to submit to the Angle Lock.

The bitter rivalry between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero dominated 2005 and they took their feud to a personal level at SummerSlam. They collided in a ladder match with the custody of Rey's son Dominik hanging in the balance.

Guerrero and Mysterio didn't just use the ladder to inflict pain on each other, they had an excellent technical wrestling match. Ultimately, Latino Heat was close to retrieving the briefcase but his wife Vickie intervened and prevented him from grabbing it. Mysterio prevailed in a superb match which was soap opera at its finest.
