Every Stable & Tag Team That CM Punk Has Been Part Of, Ranked Worst To Best

Going all the way back to his days wrestling in IWA Mid-South, CM Punk has proven to be a standout performer in the sport, with success following in Ring of Honor, WWE, and now All Elite Wrestling. While he’s mostly been a singles star, he’s also done a lot of teaming up with other wrestlers, both in tag teams and as part of stables or factions.

In fact, CM Punk has been involved in team-ups since his earliest days, so let’s take a look at every duo and group Punk has ever been involved with, from the least significant all the way to the best ones.

10 CM Punk & Seth Skyfire (OVW)

Before debuting in the revival of ECW, CM Punk first had a stint in WWE’s developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling. While he managed to capture the Heavyweight Title in developmental, he also had an extremely brief run as OVW Southern Tag Team Champion alongside now-retired high flyer Seth Skyfire. After beating previous champions Shad Gaspard and The Neighborhoodie (a.k.a. JTG), Punk and Skyfire dropped the tag belts to Deuce and Domino a mere five days after winning them.

9 The New Breed (ECW)

Speaking of the ECW revival, one of the big early storylines involved the younger ECW heels like Elijah Burke and Kevin Thorn forming a faction called the New Breed to oppose veterans like Rob Van Dam and Tommy Dreamer. CM Punk would eventually join the New Breed, turning heel in the process. However, Punk seemed suited to being ECW’s top babyface, so he was quick to betray the New Breed and resume being a babyface. Not only did the faction fail to really take off, but Punk’s involvement in the group was very short-lived.

8 Chick Magnets (LWF)

CM Punk got his start wrestling for a backyard wrestling promotion called the Lunatic Wrestling Federation, which would later evolve into a more standard indie outfit. Teaming with a wrestler named CM Venom as the Chick Magnets led to a ring name that would define CM Punk, who’s never had any other moniker during his wrestling career.

While footage of the Chick Magnets is hard to come by, the team ranks higher than some of the groups above simply because of historical significance.

7 The New Dawn (FIP)

The New Dawn (FIP)

Founded in 2003, Florida-based promotion Full Impact Pro essentially functioned as a sister promotion to Ring of Honor, and thus featured many notable talents over the years. CM Punk performed in FIP from 2004 to 2005, and even put together a little faction for himself. Claiming to be a leader around which the outcasts of the world could gather, Punk had a group called the New Dawn, which included Samoa Joe among its ranks.

6 CM Punk & Kofi Kingston (WWE)

Before forming the New Day — not to be confused with the New Dawn — Kofi Kingston is no stranger to being randomly paired with other babyfaces like Evan Bourne and R-Truth. In 2008, he was randomly paired with CM Punk, and the two managed to beat Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. for the World Tag Team Championship, kicking off a 47-day run as champions. Their run together, however, is rather forgettable, and the duo dropped the belts to The Miz and John Morrison at a house show on their first defense — two months after winning them.

5 Gold Bond Mafia (IWA Mid-South)

Gold Bond Mafia (IWA Mid-South)

A stable of mostly Illinois-based wrestlers — many of whom shared a trainer in Ace Steel — the Gold Bond Mafia included not only CM Punk and Colt Cabana, but also Chris Hero, future WWE authority figure Adam Pearce, and future Ring of Honor and Game Changer Wrestling commentator Dave Prazak. Mostly based in IWA Mid-South, the group also showed up in other indies like CHIKARA. An impressive array of notable performers, the name of the group was an inside joke about the sensation of putting Gold Bond powder on one’s genitals.

4 New Nexus (WWE)

Following the dissolution of the Straight Edge Society (see below), CM Punk found himself taking over leadership of another faction, The Nexus. With the ousting of Wade Barrett and the defection of many founding members, the New Nexus included Punk, David Otunga, Michael McGillicutty, Mason Ryan, and the future Bray Wyatt, Husky Harris.

The group arguably had a better T-shirt than the previous iteration of the Nexus, but the group failed to gain nearly as much traction and quietly disappeared after Punk won the WWE Championship from John Cena in 2011.

3 The Gathering (Impact)

CM Punk, Mickie James, and Raven as The Gathering in Impact

With a couple notable exceptions, it’s hard to go wrong with a faction run by Raven, one of the most charismatic and effective heels of the mid-to-late 1990s who never really became a huge star in the major promotions. During his brief foray into Impact Wrestling (then known as TNA), Punk became a member of one such Raven faction, The Gathering, alongside Julio Dinero and Alexis Laree (a.k.a. Mickie James). Punk tagged with Julio Dinero, but never captured any gold save for a month-long run with the tag belts in the New Jersey-based NWA Cyberspace.

2 Straight Edge Society (WWE)

Straight Edge Society (WWE)

For WWE fans, the Straight Edge Society is the no-brainer best CM Punk stable. While it mostly existed within the year 2010, SES saw Punk as a messianic cult leader heelishly brainwashing people to follow his straight edge lifestyle, and included Luke Gallows, Serena Deeb, and Joey Mercury among its ranks. For WWE fans, it was a new side of CM Punk, who’d previously been a babyface, and featured memorable moments like the head shaving initiations into the SES and an intense feud with Rey Mysterio.

1 Second City Saints (ROH)

Second City Saints: CM Punk and Colt Cabana

Another faction of Illinois-based wrestlers, Ring of Honor’s Second City Saints included CM Punk, Colt Cabana, their trainer Ace Steel, and Lucy Furr (a.k.a. Daffney) and Traci Brooks as valets. While they didn’t appear as a stable too often during their ROH run, as a tag team Punk and Cabana proved to be an effective and beloved force during their time teaming, and managed to score two ROH Tag Team Title runs, for a total of 100 days, not to mention some classic matches against teams like The Briscoe Brothers and The Prophecy.
