Warning: contains spoilers for The Flash #4!The Flash has at long last met his true, and terrifying opposite: the Resident. Writer Si Spurrier and artist Mike Deodato kicked off a new era for the Flash recently, deepening the mysteries of the Speed Force as well as introducing new and exciting characters to the mythos. In The Flash #4, fans meet the eerie and unsettling Resident, who dwells in a mysterious garden outside of time and space, and seems to have plans for Wally West.

The Flash #4 is written by Spurrier and drawn by Deodato. The Flash is drawn to the mysterious garden he discovered a few weeks prior. There, he is confronted by the Resident, a ghostly being who knows more than they are letting on. They describe themselves, and the garden, as: “reality at its slowest vibration. This is the universe as it exists in the abstraction of your mind.” As the Flash roams through the garden, he is slowly drained of his will to leave, and the Resident almost seems to be enticing him to stay.

It Is an Interesting Time to be the Flash

Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato have shaken up the Flash’s world, upending everything fans thought they knew about him and the Speed Force. Someone is giving the Flash’s villains super-speed upgrades, while Irey learns she may be more powerful than her father. As if this was not enough, the Flash has discovered a garden of statues, existing beyond time and space, that holds the key to a new teleportation power. Wally has also encountered mysterious beings living in the Speed Force that may hold the key to it all.

And the Resident is the most disturbing of these new characters yet. Their motives are unknown, but seem to involve getting the Flash to stay in the garden. While this garden gives the Flash a major advantage power-wise, it comes with a huge catch: the longer he stays, the more he does not want to leave. The Resident is coy with answers, even going as far as to tell Wally they might be a figment of his imagination. The Resident does not tell Wally to stay, but does not offer any help in leaving either. The Resident is a true mystery in the Flash’s world.

The Resident Will Be a Big Part of the Flash's Life

Fans have debated who the Flash’s true opposite is, and this issue makes it clear: it is the Resident. They describe the garden as “slow,” an obvious departure from the Flash. The names themselves demonstrate their conflicting natures: a name like the Resident implies rest and being static, whereas the Flash is all about movement. Fans may think that Professor Zoom is the Flash’s true opposite, but recent issues have introduced the Resident, an unnerving presence that is out to get Wally West.
