Highlights
- Goldberg accused WWE of disrespecting him by having Asuka break his undefeated streak, showing a misogynistic side.
- Asuka's NXT streak lasted 914 days, surpassing Goldberg's wins, yet she respected him in a tweet.
- Goldberg's comments about Asuka have resulted in fans turning on him, making a WWE return unlikely.
Goldberg is taking a lot of heat this week for comments he made about the personal issues he had with Triple H and then using WWE Superstar Asuka as "proof" that WWE and Triple H was out to ruin his reputation and the legacy of his undefeated winning streak. For some inexplicable reason, Goldberg decided to insult Asuka while claiming that WWE intentionally had her break his undefeated streak as a way to disrespect him.
During an interview with Nothing Left Unsaid, Bill Goldberg talked about the friction he had and likely still has in WWE after his run in WCW. Trying to suggest that his not getting along with Triple H was the reason they had someone beat his streak, he then mispronounced Asuka's name and called her "some Japanese girl." From the interview, an excerpt from what he said is below:
“A girl beat my winning streak… beat my undefeated streak. Yeah, I can’t even remember… ‘A-soo-ka’ is her name. Some Japanese girl. And they touted her as being the one to have the longest winning streak. And it just so happened that that culminated when I got there. And then, it just so happened that every single wrestler uses the spear in their moves. Pretty ironic that happened when I got there, right?”
Asuka's NXT streak lasted 914 days and it saw her go undefeated from September 2015 until Wrestlemania 34 when she lost to Charlotte Flair. Asuka surpassed Goldberg’s 173 wins at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in 2017. Goldberg clearly didn't like that decision, even though Asuka showed total respect for him in a tweet at the time she broke the record.
What's more bothersome than the fact he didn't like someone breaking his record is that he hinted it was more disrespectful because a girl did it. Then to call her "some Japanese girl" has not set well with fans.
Asuka Removed From WWE Live Events After Suffering Injury During SmackDown
Asuka appeared to have suffered an injury during Friday's SmackDown. It's serious enough she was removed from live events this weekend. Why Is Goldberg Unloading On Asuka & WWE?
It seems evident Goldberg has given up on the idea that he'll ever return to WWE, especially with Triple H in charge. As such, he's saying whatever he wants and taking shots. But in doing so, he's shown a very unappealing and misogynistic side to his personality. The disrespect he's showing to Asuka has seen hundreds of fans turn on him in the comment sections of videos that show the footage of that interview. If WWE was even remotely considering bringing him back, they aren't likely to do so now.
An Old Scott Hall Tweet Hasn't Been Kind To Goldberg
Goldberg has been on thin ice with wrestling fans for a long time. Fans weren't happy when he returned to WWE and ended the Universal Championships of two younger stars in Bray Wyatt and Kevin Owens. There of course is the old feud between Goldberg and beloved WWE legend Bret Hart who claims that Goldberg is responsible for his career ending prematurely due to a botched superkick. An old tweet about Goldberg from the deceased Scott Hall has also cropped up where after Asuka paid respect to Goldberg after she beat his undefeated record. In the tweet, Hall makes a claim that many wrestling fans share:
Even if one is a fan of Goldberg, one must admit that Asuka has shown to be a much more diverse performer than the WCW icon ever was.
