Gunn Club Pull A Heist, Rick Ross Strikes Again
Tonight's episode of Dynamite was a special "Holiday Bash" edition of the show. It was a lot of things, but it certainly wasn't slow. For a lot of wrestling fans, this is a win in itself, especially when compared to some dragged-out episodes of Monday Night Raw. RELATED: Matt Hardy Gives Update On Jeff Hardy's Current SituationThe in-ring action was solid, as is usually the case for AEW. Unfortunately, another common occurrence for AEW is messy, confused story lines. This episode had a lot of that, too.
Undecided: The JAS Recruits Ricky Starks
Despite Ricky's loss to MJF next week, AEW is continuing to put momentum behind him. This is both very smart and long overdue; with his charisma, Ricky has the potential to be a major name for AEW. He opened Dynamite with a promo, but was interrupted by Chris Jericho, who then said he wants Ricky to join JAS. Ricky delivered a solid roasting session in response.
When Ricky was jumped from behind by Jake Hager, Action Andretti came to his aid. This angle will hopefully build both Andretti and Starks as top babyfaces in AEW, but the JAS doesn't have a good track record with feuds.
Winner: The Elite Outlast The Death Triangle
The Elite and Death Triangle have done a great job at making each match in this series feel unique. Tonight's bout was a No Disqualification match that featured the use of a Christmas tree as a weapon and Kenny's infamous barbed wire broom.
The match was wonderfully chaotic from start to finish. The Elite winning was predictable, but predictability isn't always a bad thing in wrestling. This series is only getting hotter as it goes on.
Loser: Ethan Page Confronts Bryan Danielson
Bryan Danielson spoke to Renee Paquette in the ring. He told a roundabout story about how much William Regal means to him. The sentiment was sweet, but the fact that Regal abruptly left AEW to take a much better paying job at WWE made Danielson's speech hard to care about.
Danielson was interrupted by Ethan Page. AEW has tried to make Ethan Page feel important but has yet to succeed. That seems unlikely to change now that Ethan Page is on track to lose to yet another wrestler higher up on the pecking order.
LOSER: Hook Squashes Jobber, Jungle Boy Gets Thrown In Dumpster
Hook had a short squash match against independent wrestler Exodus Prime. After Hook tapped him out, the titantron showed Big Bill of the Firm throwing Jungle Boy into a dumpster. Hook promptly left the ring and Moxley's entrance music began to play for the next match.
Once again, the Firm are hard to take seriously as a faction in AEW. While Jungle Boy and Hook are an intriguing pairing, its hard to see this storyline getting much momentum. Hopefully that changes.
WINNER: Moxley Brutalizes Darius Martin
A more heelish side has come out of Jon Moxley these last few weeks. To build up to this match, Moxley cut a promo earlier in the episode about how it's not his fault that his opponents might be injury prone. He did a good job balancing between cruelty and honesty.
It was nice to see Darius of Top Flight back in the ring after he was in a devastating car accident a few months ago. He and his brother Dante have the potential to be some of AEW's most likable babyface tag teams.
WINNER: The Book Of Hobbs
This series of vignettes are helping to make Powerhouse Hobbs one of the most complex heels in AEW. This is something very much needed when considering how one-dimensional the heels are in AEW when compared to the babyfaces. Hopefully this leads to a big push for Hobbs.
LOSER: The Gunn Club's Highway Robbery
The feud between FTR and the Gunns continues. This time, the Gunn brothers once again pulled a fast one over FTR, this time by holding the rope to get a pinfall and defeat the AAA/IWGP Tag Team Champions. The match itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about, either.
The Gunn club are still coasting off the heat they got while feuding with the Acclaimed and have yet to really establish themselves on their own terms. Hopefully, this feud with FTR will bring some personality out of them.
LOSER: Rick Ross Watches Swerve And Company Beat Up Keith Lee
Celebrity appearances can be a tricky thing in wrestling. Sometimes they go off without a hitch and help to draw a lot of eyes to the wrestling promotion's product. Other times, they produce some of the most confused segments that wrestling has ever seen. This was, unfortunately, an example of the latter.
During this segment, it was revealed that Swerve is building his own faction. It is comprised of former NXT star Parker Boudreaux and an unsettling-looking man covered in tattoos who has yet to be identified. All this to say that things are looking bleak for this new faction already.
WINNER: Jamie Hayter And Hikaru Shida Put On A Strong Style Classic
It's always nice to see women treated like a major priority in AEW. It was very refreshing to see the women featured in a main event. Plus, of all women to feature in this slot, Jamie and Shida were the perfect candidates. Both are veterans of the sport and arguably the two best women's wrestlers on the roster.
This match was an absolute slugfest. It featured several brutal spots, including a suplex from the apron to the floor. The match was so good, in fact, that it wasn't outshined by Saraya's awkward appearance to close the show.
