How A Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage WWE Promo Accidentally Predicted 9/11

Quick Links

During the 1980s, many wrestling promos in WWE were completely improvised, hence, why they all seem like they’re completely out of left field. Even top guys like Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage were as intense, as it sounded like they were completely off their rockers.

Whether it was separately talking about being the cream of the crop or a new Hulkamania commandment, or together as The Mega Powers, the two Hall of Famers went off the rails more than once, and thanks to some internet memes, it looked like they did their fair share of rails too. In one of their most bizarre promos, The Mega Powers even somehow inadvertently predicted the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Hulk Hogan And Randy Savage As The Mega Powers Were The Perfect Union

In late 1987, the Macho Man was still a crazed heel, but he was also getting plenty of respect from the fans. That respect was fostered into love during the infamous episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event that saw Savage beaten down unmercifully by The Honky Tonk Man and The Hart Foundation. Miss Elizabeth would toss herself into harm’s way, narrowly avoiding getting smashed with the guitar. She’d run to the back and arrived with backup in the form of Hulk Hogan.

Hogan didn’t balk at all at helping a former rival and the full-fledged babyface turn for Savage was sealed with a handshake show of thanks and respect. From that moment on, Hogan and Savage would continue to help one another, most famously, Hogan helping Savage win the WWE title at WrestleMania 4. The Mega Powers would soon form afterwards, and after feuding with Andre the Giant and The Million Dollar Man, their attentions turned to The Big Boss Man and Akeem, known as The Twin Towers.

On Saturday Night's Main Event, Hogan And Savage Talked About Tearing Down The Twin Towers

If you throw a dart anywhere on the internet, you’re bound to find all sorts of conspiracies regarding the horrific attacks on 9/11, but did you think you’d see any wrestling clips lumped in with those conspiracy theories? There are some people who do think, that somehow, over eleven years earlier on Saturday Night’s Main Event, WWE eerily predicted the horrific events of that fateful day. Not only did The Mega Powers talk about destroying The Twin Towers, Mean Gene Okerlund labeled The Big Bossman and Akeem terrorists for the way they were attacked Savage and Hogan.

During The Mega Powers’ interview before the match, Mean Gene got started by stating that they were one mind and one had one goal in mind, which was, “to defeat, or should I say, demolish The Twin Towers.” Hulkster ran with that thought and said that they would “tear down the Twin Towers.” Some wild-eyed dot connectors even point to The Macho Man describing the handcuffs on Elizabeth and how she felt that pain to be all about how jet fuel couldn’t melt the steel beams, argument some have made to call 9/11 and inside job. Macho Man said that it was a pain he felt too, and a pain Hulk Hogan felt, and a pain they were going to repay. “The pain won’t stop until The Twin Towers come tumbling down.”

The Twin Towers Promo Is Nothing More Than A Creepy Coincidence

On the way to their own explosion, The Mega Powers delivered a promo about how they were going to take down the tag team known as The Twin Towers. Take a look at Akeem and The Big Boss Man. Prior to the events of 9/11, what the heck else were you going to call them?! It was a great name for two big men wrestlers. The promo was nothing more, nothing less and shouldn’t get roped into any kind of strange illuminati conspiracy that somehow the WWE of all companies had inside knowledge of the horrific attacks on The United States on September 11, 2001.

There is a various swath of people that not only buy into this stuff, but of course there is a vast group of people deeply traumatized by that day. Certainly seeing an old school Golden Era promo retroactively referencing the terror attacks isn’t the best thing for them. Oddly enough, especially considering all involved, it’s a pretty forgettable promo had it not been retroactively tied to history.
