James Gunn Reveals Whether He’d Make a Live-Action Rick & Morty Movie

Moviemaker James Gunn responds to a Twitter fan who asks whether he'd be interested in adapting Rick and Morty into a live-action movie.

Despite his adoration for the franchise, James Gunn has said he isn't interested in adapting Rick and Morty into a live-action movie. Gunn, who is currently busy directing Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3has more recently scored a successful run with hit DC show Peacemaker, a spinoff of his equally popular The Suicide Squad. Although Gunn's eyes are firmly set on his many superhero ventures, the director will also lend his producing credentials to Warner Bros. live-action/animated hybrid, Coyote vs Asme, where Gunn will again work with Peacemaker's John Cena.

Gunn's love for Rick and Morty is easy to understand. The show, which follows scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty as they traverse a bizarre multiverse, has established a passionate fanbase over the years, thanks to sharp writing and irreverent comedy stylings. The show has also set itself apart from other adult comedies, with episode-spanning storylines and much deeper lore when compared to its contemporaries. Rick and Morty season 5, in particular, ended with potentially game-changing revelations, leaving fans clamoring for more.

Although Gunn isn't shy when it comes to addressing his love of Rick and Morty, it seems the director isn't interested in taking his fondness any further. Replying to a Tweet from a fan asking if Gunn would consider a live-action adaption of the show, the director stated that he thinks "the animated series is just so beautiful & perfect" and he "would never touch it." Rounding out the Tweet, Gunn described the show as "One of the greatest TV shows ever." Check out the Tweet below:

The prospect of a live-action Rick and Morty seems like a huge undertaking, but recent shorts show the idea isn't impossible. Leading up to Rick and Morty's season 5 finale, several clips starring Christopher Lloyd and Jaeden Martell as the shows titular characters were released, giving fans a glimpse of what the duo may look like in a live-action setting. Although the shorts seem to be just that, Lloyd fit the role of a live-action Rick Sanchez perfectly, which is, of course, no surprise, as Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland has spoken in the past about how the show started as a Back to the Future parody.

But with so many questions left to be answered in Rick and Morty season 6, it doesn't seem like Lloyd, or any other actor, will play Sanchez in the flesh any time soon. Gunn is also incredibly busy at the moment, despite his Rick and Morty obsession recently leaking onto the Guardians of the Galaxy set, where a secretive member of the team has been littering the moviemakers desk with Rick and Morty keychains. Regardless of his Rick and Morty superfan status, if a live-action adaption ever came to fruition, it seems Gunn has removed himself from the running for any potential involvement.
