Summary

  • Bee Movie, despite its lackluster reception and underperformance at the box office, has gained a strong cult following eager for a sequel.
  • Jerry Seinfeld, lead cast member and screenwriter of Bee Movie, is on the fence about making Bee Movie 2, as he believes it would diminish the iconic status of the first film.
  • While a Bee Movie sequel is not confirmed, there is a possibility that Universal could move forward without Seinfeld and potentially introduce a new cast, exploring a larger world outside of bees.

Bee Movie is an obscure animated movie starring Jerry Seinfeld but has gained a huge cult following, and here's all the Bee Movie 2 news. The original film was released in 2007, and the movie is based on a simple concept Seinfeld joked about to a producer, commenting that he wanted to make a B-movie about a bee (via Reuters). The comedian's idea grew into an animated movie that didn't quite have the heart of a Pixar project, nor did it have the charismatic characters that DreamWorks Animation is known for. Despite a great voice cast including Seinfeld, Renée Zellweger, Chris Rock, and many others, Bee Movie wasn't successful on release. In the years since, however, it's gained a unique following of its own — one that always seems eager for any news of Bee Movie 2.

Looking at the numbers, there's little indication that a sequel to Bee Movie is in demand. Bee Movie has a "rotten" 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience's reception wasn't much better either, as it has a less-than-stellar 6.1 on IMDb. Bee Movie made $293 million at the worldwide box office, which is technically an underperformance given its $150 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). Nevertheless, despite all these setbacks, the movie has grown a huge cult following, and there's now a demand for a Bee Movie sequel. While Seinfeld is working on a Pop-Tarts movie, it isn't totally out of the question that the comedian could return for Bee Movie 2.

Bee Movie 2 Most Recent News

The most recent Bee Movie 2 news that gave any indication on whether it would happen or not came all the way back in 2016, from the Bee Movie lead cast member and screenwriter Jerry Seinfeld. The Bee Movie sequel news isn't all that hopeful, as Seinfeld revealed that he doesn't actually want to make Bee Movie 2, but for one surprising reason. Seinfeld acknowledged the cult status of the movie (via Cartoon Brew), noting, "There’s a fantastic energy now for some reason, on the internet particularly... I actually did consider it, but then I realized it would make Bee Movie 1 less iconic." The comedian also hilariously noted, "I considered it this spring for a solid six hours."

Unfortunately, while Seinfeld seems on the fence about a Bee Movie sequel, the comedian doesn't seem like a man who can be convinced. The actor has been known to drop projects at the height of their popularity simply because he lost interest in them, and no amount of money can convince him otherwise. Seinfeld ended his popular 1990s sitcom Seinfeld despite the network wanting him to continue, and he lost interest in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee despite its growing popularity on Netflix. With that in mind, it's unlikely that Seinfeld will ever change his mind about Bee Movie 2.

Bee Movie 2 Is Still Not Confirmed

A Bee Movie sequel is not confirmed, and as a result, there is no Bee Movie 2 release date. Given that it wasn't until a decade after its release that Bee Movie became popular and a cult classic, greenlighting a Bee Movie sequel would still be a huge risk, not to mention that Seinfeld wants to protect the original movie's legacy. However, Seinfeld also added, "My kids want me to do it, a lot of people want me to do it." Actors have taken roles to impress their children, so in a scenario like that, there's always a chance Seinfeld will cave in and confirm Bee Movie 2 for his kids, no matter how slim that chance might be.

Bee Movie 2 Cast

The Bee Movie 2 cast could see the return of not only Jerry Seinfeld, but Zellweger, Broderick, and John Goodman too. However, given that Seinfeld doesn't want to make the sequel, there's no reason why Universal can't go forward with a Bee Movie 2 without him. The movie would certainly be missing Seinfeld's edgy comedy that was present in the first movie, but the sequel could feature a brand-new cast.

Many years have passed since 2007's Bee Movie, so Bee Movie 2 could bring in some contemporary actors known for their animated voice work. Awkwafina has become the go-to A-list voice actor, and she'd fit perfectly in the Bee Movie world. Chris Pratt has built an impressive voice work resume too, and it'd be easy to see him in a Bee Movie sequel. As Chris Rock is always present in the world of voice work, he could return for the Bee Movie 2 cast as Mooseblood the Mosquito.

Bee Movie 2 Story

Bee Movie surprisingly set up the Bee Movie 2 story, and it hilariously isn't even about Bees. At the end of Bee Movie, a cow is introduced who wants to sue dairy farmers, teasing a whole world that can be explored outside of bees. Bee Movie pulled off Zootopia almost a decade before Zootopia was released. A Bee Movie sequel can explore this bigger world while continuing the original's unique absurdist humor. The cynical humor and observational wit that Seinfeld implemented into Bee Movie can continue in Bee Movie 2, and it could even be self-aware and use the internet's obsession with the original movie to its advantage.
