Mindhunter Season 3 Update Shared By Jonathan Groff
Series star Jonathan Groff comments on the chances that Mindhunter season 3 will ever get made, unexpectedly comparing the Netflix show to Frozen.
Series star Jonathan Groff gives an update on the chances of a Mindhunter season 3. The Netflix thriller show from creator Joe Penhall and de facto showrunner David Fincher premiered in 2017 to critical acclaim, with season 2 getting an even more enthusiastic response in 2019. The following year, however, Mindhunter was put on indefinite hold, casting doubt on a potential season 3.
Starring Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, Mindhunter dramatizes the founding of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, which spearheaded the bureau's practice of criminal profiling. As the main storyline developed, the episodes also included short, contemporary scenes of Dennis Rader, later dubbed the BTK Killer, which seemed to signal his 2005 arrest as where the show's story was eventually headed. A myriad of behind-the-scenes factors, including cost and the associated workload for Fincher, resulted in the show being put on hold instead of cancelled, with Netflix leaving the door open for future episodes of the series down the line.
Now, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Groff comments on the chances of Mindhunter season 3 being made. Asked by the host for an update regarding the status of two of his projects, the Netflix show and the Frozen movie franchise, Groff decides to cryptically tie them together. In his eyes, the actor says, third installments for both very different properties seem equally possible, though he smiles and shrugs when the studio audience starts applauding. Check out Groff's full quote below:
I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, Frozen and Mindhunter, I feel like a third Frozen and a third season of Mindhunter are equally possible.
While this might have fans of two very disparate franchises checking for the other's chances, Groff's answer doesn't inspire confidence in either project coming to fruition. What's perhaps most notable for viewers of the thriller series is that the actor doesn't shoot down Mindhunter season 3 entirely, possibly suggesting he would still be open to a return if the opportunity ever materializes. Back in 2020, a Netflix spokesperson had said a possible timeline for revisiting the series could be five years, meaning audiences shouldn't expect Holden Ford and Bill Tench back on the small screen anytime soon.
Ultimately, while multiple scheduling concerns could end up being in play, the deciding factor on Mindhunter season 3 is likely to be Fincher. While the director himself mentioned that the show's passionate fanbase never reached the kind of numbers that justified its cost, the fact that Netflix didn't cancel it outright suggests they would be amenable to funding more episodes. Fincher's new movie, The Killer, wrapped filming just last month, so he will probably be making decisions on his next project by the end of the year - which should be the absolute earliest Mindhunter fans could hope to receive some good news.
