Only One of Pokémon's Team Rocket Duos Got the Happy End Jessie & James Deserved
Pokémon's second most popular Team Rocket duo got to retire in peace, a fate which stands at odds with that of the much more popular Jessie and James.
Summary
- Butch and Cassidy, often seen as more competent than Jessie and James, have retired from Team Rocket to pursue a peaceful life running a café and bakery.
- In the episode "The Good, the Bad, and the Lucky!", Jessie and James are rescued by Cassidy after getting into trouble while chasing a machine. Cassidy explains that she left Team Rocket to experience a different life.
- Butch and Cassidy's decision to retire and find happiness outside of Team Rocket contrasts with Jessie and James, who continue to chase Pikachu. It's refreshing to see villains turn a new leaf and live peacefully.
While Jessie and James may be chasing Pikachu forever, Pokémon's other Team Rocket duo, Butch and Cassidy, have managed to make a pretty nice life for themselves by retiring.
Butch and Cassidy were the most commonly seen Team Rocket members aside from Jessie and James across the series' history, dating all the way back to the original series. They were largely portrayed as a rival pair to Jessie and James, considered far more competent, and had much more of Giovanni's favor when they first appeared. However, like Jessie and James, repeated losses to Ash and his crew over the years led to them becoming jokes as well. Where Butch and Cassidy really proved they differed, however, was that they had the good sense to give up the Team Rocket life and retire, according to Pokémon Journeys.
Butch and Cassidy Live Happily Ever After?
In the episode "The Good, the Bad, and the Lucky!" Jessie and James are chasing down a machine known as the Rocket Prize Master, which they feel let them down in their last encounter with Ash. Their chase leads them through some wild situations, and they eventually wake up in an unfamiliar house with food set out for them. It turns out that the pair (and Meowth) have been rescued by Cassidy, Jessie's old rival. Cassidy explains that she's no longer with Team Rocket, as she wanted to experience life beyond being a Rocket member. Cassidy is now running a little café in a snowy region, and it's revealed that Butch has a bakery, having retired as well.
Butch and Cassidy had actually gone hundreds of episodes without being seen, last appearing in Diamond and Pearl, and this episode makes it clear why. While it isn't made obvious whether Butch and Cassidy's relationship is romantic, as their businesses are a little ways apart, it's fair to say that the ending that these two wound up with is the one many fans were hoping for with Jessie and James. Their ultimate fate certainly makes for a striking contrast with Jessie and James, who end the series just the same way they started it: chasing Pikachu.
Butch and Cassidy may not have been the fan favorites that Jessie and James were, but it's always good to see when a recurring bad guy is able to turn over a new leaf and learn to live peacefully. The Team Rocket life seems to be filled with a lot of failure and difficulty, at least for these four, so retiring from all that to find out what else life has to offer is a logical decision. Quitting Team Rocket seems to have been the best thing that Butch and Cassidy have ever done, and it's a shame that Pokémon fans won't get to see Jessie and James do the same.
