Randy Savage & Stephanie McMahon WWE Rumor

Read update
  • The professional wrestling business is loaded with high profile families and that includes families that have bridged the gap between being on-air talents and promoters behind the scenes. From the Anoa'is to the Rhodes clan to the Hart family or the Von Erichs of Iron Claw fame, these are families whose identities and bonds are largely defined by the business. Heck, even Randy Savage was a promoter's son, in addition to his brother Lanny Poffo being a part of the business. Out of these families, none have accumulated more fame, speculation, or scrutiny than the McMahons.

The number of skeletons in the closets of many wrestling personalities is insurmountable. Many have done some pretty despicable things in the past, and not just in the WWE. Certain performers aren't very proud of those decisions and others are shamelessly proud of them. However, for all the bad things that are known and confirmed, there is an equal amount of things that are only assumed or believed to be true with no confirmation ever present. These allegations and rumors can hurt the performers they regard or just simply become a piece of wrestling lore. It truly depends on how believable the rumor is, and when it comes to the rumor about Stephanie McMahon and "Macho Man" Randy Savage, there's a lot to be unpacked.

UPDATE: 2024/03/03 17:30 EST BY MICHAEL CHIN

The professional wrestling business is loaded with high profile families and that includes families that have bridged the gap between being on-air talents and promoters behind the scenes.

While a conspiracy theory about The Macho Man having an affair with a young Stephanie McMahon principally concerns those two specific wrestling personalities, the popularity of this idea undeniably has connections to Stephanie's father as well. Even before the allegations that forever tarnished his legacy, Vince was largely synonymous with his libido both in real life and on screen, and there's little question his reputation rubbed off on how fans perceive Stephanie.

The Rumor Was That Randy Savage And Stephanie McMahon Were Involved Romantically

Years Before Stephanie McMahon Even Met Triple H, Rumor Had It Another World Champion Became Involved With Her

Randy Savage Vince McMahon
  • The rumor about Randy Savage and Stephanie McMahon being intertwined seems to have started on an online message board.
  • The speculation is that Stephanie McMahon was eighteen when she hooked up with Randy Savage.
  • The Death Valley Driver message board played host to the first known public discussion of this conspiracy theory.

Everyone knows about early 1990s WWE, and how awful the product was becoming. They were losing viewership, losing money, and losing stars. One of the biggest stars they lost was Randy Savage, but after WCW was bought by Vince McMahon, all the top stars from the company made their debut or return to the WWE at some point. Ric Flair came by the end of that year, NWO not long after, Goldberg about a year later, and Sting almost 15 years later. However, the one person who never came back was "Macho Man" Randy Savage. There could be many reasons why he and Vince McMahon never reconciled, but one reason in particular started to rumble among fans during the Monday Night War, and more formally took shape in 2004.

A wrestling message board called Death Valley Driver posted a prompt telling users to drop their craziest wrestling dirt they know about. After over a hundred of the wackiest posts, only one stuck in the minds of fans. It was that Stephanie McMahon and Randy Savage were hooking up in the 90s, Vince McMahon found about it, and that's why Savage left the company. Never mind why so many people believed a random post by a random person on a random wrestling message board, but the user couldn't even do simple math and said Stephanie was 14 years old at the time. Stephanie was born 1976, so she would've been 18 years old in 1994.

Randy Savage's Ex-Girlfriend Claims The Rumor Is True

At Least One Person With Intimate Knowledge Of The Macho Man's Life Has Endorsed The Rumor

Randy Savage Gorgeous George
  • Vince McMahon welcomed back a lot of wrestlers he'd had personal heat with, so it stood out even more that he never brought back Randy Savage.
  • Stephanie Bellars, a girlfriend of Randy Savage's, made vague claims that suggested The Macho Man had been with Stephanie McMahon.
  • Hardcore Holly and Dutch Mantell each offered some inklings that would support the Stephanie McMahon-Randy Savage conspiracy theory.

The biggest supporting point for the rumor and the biggest reason why so many people believe that it's true is that Randy Savage was never brought back to WWE. Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, and most recently CM Punk all had real issues with Vince, but they were all still brought back because Vince knows what's best for business, so the big question was what could Savage have done so wrong that Vince never wanted him back? Well, an affair with his daughter would be a pretty good reason as to why.

Randy Savage had numerous rivals during WWE's Golden Era, from midcarders to some of the top names in wrestling history.

Another big piece of evidence pointing towards the claim being true is that Macho Man's ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Bellars, revealed that Savage accidentally spilled the beans to her. She claimed that they were sitting on a beach, high as a kite on ecstasy and that he admitted "everything" to her. She never went into what Savage actually said to her as her answer to the question was extremely vague.

Other small things have come out in the many years since the rumor started such as Hardcore Holly saying, in his book, that they were always friendly with each other, Dutch Mantell saying that Savage was ordered to stay away from Stephanie, and the fact that Macho Man wasn't inducted into the Hall of Fame until four years after his death. However, perhaps the biggest thing is that no one has ever outright disproven the claim. Bruce Prichard says he believes it's not true, but didn't offer very specific evidence to deny it.

There's Plenty Of Evidence Showing The Rumors About Randy Savage And Stephanie McMahon Are False

Rumors Of An Affair Are Fun, But There's Little To Substantiate Them

  • There are other reasons why Randy Savage may never have returned to WWE, not least of all including that The Macho Man's in-ring career was winding down in the late stages of WCW.
  • Bruce Prichard has suggested there were talks, more than once, about bringing The Macho Man back into the fold.
  • Randy Savage went into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015.

If that was everything this urban legend had to offer, then it'd be obvious that it was true, but it's not everything. Conveniently, around the time that the rumor hit the message boards, Triple H did an interview where he called Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage dinosaurs. Hogan didn't really care, but Savage took offense to those words. He then posted a video on his website where he said that Hogan was a punk, he'd slap Triple H around, and that he'd steal Triple H's girl and "take her around the block." An outburst like that seems like another good reason why Vince would never want Savage back in his company.

Before His Tragic Death, Randy Savage Almost Made A WWE Return
Just before his 2011 death, Randy Savage looked to be making amends with WWE, after years away from the company.

Again, other small things point towards the contrary. Bruce Prichard claimed that the WWE and Macho Man were actually in negotiations in 1996. Savage also had issues with Hogan, who was brought back in 2002. Savage did an interview for WWE Magazine in 2003, and apparently, he was actually asked to go into the Hall of Fame as early as 2010 but didn't want to go in without his HOF-worthy brother and father.

Other Wrestlers Have Had Close Connections To Members Of The McMahon Family

Some Of These Wrestlers Benefited, While Others "Flew Too Close To The Sun"

Vince McMahon Undertaker Johnny Polo
  • The Undertaker developed a friendship with Vince McMahon over the years.
  • Fans have long speculated about the role of nepotism in Triple H's rise to power, after marrying into the McMahon family.
  • Wrestlers like Raven claim that a bond with one McMahon actually hurt their careers in the business.

If the rumors of a romantic or sexual relationship between Randy Savage and young Stephanie McMahon were true, The Macho Man certainly didn't have much to gain professionally from the situation. After all, Vince McMahon was the undisputed kingpin of sports entertainment and his daughter hadn't yet risen to any formal power beyond the benefits of pure nepotism.

Savage wouldn't have been the only wrestler with a close bond to a McMahon, though. Of course, Triple H actually married into the family and for all his strong work as an excecutive, there's little question that familial connection helped his prospects. The Undertaker has famously had a special bond with Vince himself, rooted in loyalty and longevity. While The Dead Man's legacy is already beyond reproach, he only solidified his ongoing legend in this friendship.

On the flip side of things, there are situations like Raven infamously had a real life friendship with Shane McMahon behind the scenes in early 1990s. The former Johnny Polo insists that Vince held a grudge against him for being a bad influence, including the two engaging in their share of recreational substance use.

Randy Savage And Stephanie McMahon Both Have Hall Of Fame-Worthy Legacies

Their Careers Couldn't Be More Different But Are Both Important To Pro Wrestling History

  • Randy Savage went into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015, rooted in his iconic character work, all-time great abilities in the ring, and array of championships.
  • Stephanie McMahon will certainly be worthy of induction out of a combination of her work as an on-air authority figure, as well as her real-life management role.
  • While the conspiracy theory about Randy Savage and Stephanie McMahon has followed them for years, it hasn't overshadowed their accomplishments.

Looking back to the earliest days of this rumor—emerging when Randy Savage was still alive and Stephanie McMahon was just getting started as an on-air personality for WWE during the Monday Night War--it can be remarkable to consider how much time has passed and how much has changed.

For his part, Randy Savage had already established most of his legacy by the time rumors of his relationship with McMahon started. Nonetheless, the end of his career and then his untimely passing have since bolstered his legendary status as fans appreciate how far ahead of his time he was as a high-flying main eventer and on the mic.

In regards to McMahon, she was once best known simply for being the boss’s daughter but has certainly made a name for himself. Between her on-air authority figure work, actually stepping into the ring multiple times, and perhaps most importantly her efforts as an executive behind the scenes, she has become one of the most important figures in WWE history.

Fans' Eagerness To Believe The Stephanie McMahon-Randy Savage Conspiracy Theory May Have More To Do With Vince McMahon Than Either Of Them

Even Before The Legacy-Damaging Allegations, Vince McMahon Had A Reputation

  • A key part of the conspiracy theory about an affair between sTephanie McMahon and Randy Savage revolves around Vince McMahon holding a grudge.
  • Vince McMahon positioned himself in a number of sexually charged angles, particularly in the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Eras.
  • Vince McMahon was also known to have pitched sex-driven creative ideas that were poorly received.
  • Consciously or not, fans' perceptions of Stephanie McMahon are likely informed by their understanding of Vince McMahon.

Vince McMahon is a major player in the conspiracy theory around an affair between Randy Savage and Stephanie McMahon as the theory goes Vince didn't bring The Macho Man back into the fold out of outrage around his daughter's honor. The former Chairman may have more to do with why this outlandish idea got some traction than it appears at first blush, though.

Vince McMahon's History Of Sexual Allegations, Explained
Vince McMahon is in trouble again after more sexual allegations came out from a former WWE employee. Sadly, it isn't the first time.

In addition to his literal role in this alleged series of events, there are the sheer realities of Vince's public image among wrestling fans. Even before the allegations of 2022 that derailed his dominion over WWE and the even more explosive allegations of early 2024, so much of his persona revolved around sex. That ranges from his own on-screen angles that saw him engage in lascivious ways with women like Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, and the Vince's Devils faction. That's not to mention major rumors around Vince pushing for creative like an incest angle that involved either him or his son Shane being revealed as the kayfabe father of Stephanie's first child.

As such, wrestling fans may be conditioned to be all too ready to expect some form of sex scandal out of the McMahon family. The Savage rumors completely fit this narrative, with Stephanie being the subject of a forbidden affair and her father not being able to move past this most intensely personal issues, despite what would otherwise be "best for business."

The fact that this rumor even got this much support to begin with is crazy, but a rumor is all it is, and that's all it'll ever be until it's substantiated by someone directly involved. Unfortunately, The Macho Man passed away in 2011, and Stephanie McMahon will probably never sully her reputation by even acknowledging this situation in any way. Therefore, as fans are left with the unknown, they'll have to use their imaginations.
