[Report] Backstage Details On Why Kevin Owens' SmackDown Segment Was Cut

Kevin Owens' WWE future is in question with his contract on the verge of expiring.

As previously noted, Owens' WWE contract is scheduled to expire this upcoming January. That's largely why it was noteworthy following a report that WWE pulled a planned segment between Owens and Happy Corbin for last week's action-packed episode of Friday Night SmackDown that ran at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Now, it's easy to speculate that WWE canceled Owens' segment because he may be on his way out of the company. After all, Vince McMahon reportedly decided to bury The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) because they opted against signing new contracts.

However, the Owens-Corbin segment "was cut for time", according to a report from Ringside News.

It was also reported that because of time constraints, WWE decided to scrap a match that would have seen Zelina Vega and Carmella team up against Liv Morgan and Toni Storm.

Last week's episode of SmackDown saw Brock Lesnar confront Roman Reigns, who subsequently accepted his challenge for a Universal Championship match. Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair signed the Extreme Rules match contract, making their SmackDown Women's Championship match official.

In the main event, The Street Profits defeated The Usos in a SmackDown Tag Team Championships match via disqualification following interference from Reigns. Of course, the titles didn't change hands because of the disqualification ending.

WWE's Usage Of Kevin Owens Is Something To Follow Closely

Owens made headlines last week when he changed his Twitter bio location to "Almost there". The Young Bucks subsequently changed theirs to "There." This led to speculation that Owens is on his way to AEW, even though his WWE contract doesn't expire for another four and a half months.

At any rate, we'll have to see how WWE uses Owens over these next few months. If they give him more television time and/or a main event push, it'll show how much they value and hope to keep him. If we don't see him on TV much, however, that's a strong sign that WWE is fully bracing for him to leave following the expiration of his contract.
