[Report] Rey Mysterio Is Working Without A WWE Contract, Details On Latest Negotiations

Rey Mysterio's long-term future in WWE might be up in the air.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ringside News), Rey Mysterio is actually competing right now without a contract. Negotiations with WWE chairman Vince McMahon on a new deal reportedly haven't gone too smoothly, either.

On Wrestling Observer Radio (via Ringside News), Dave Meltzer explained that Rey Mysterio sought a raise, but Vince wouldn't do it, citing the fact that WWE recently released a large number of superstars.

Meltzer also believes that Mysterio's WWE deal "expired months ago." The two sides are still talking about a new contract, per Melzter. It was also noted by the Observer that WWE wants to pit Mysterio against Seth Rollins in "An Eye For An Eye" match for The Horror Show at Extreme Rules pay-per-view on July 19.

The good news is that it sounds like both sides are still keen on working together, so Mysterio fans should remain optimistic about a new contract. It would be a surprise if he left the company in the immediate future, with son Dominik being groomed as a future WWE superstar.

Mysterio has been involved in a long-term program with Rollins, Aleister Black and Murphy. All four have been key parts of the mid-card division on Monday Night Raw, and losing Mysterio now would be quite a blow for WWE officials and creative.

But at the end of the day, business is business. If Rey Mysterio doesn't get an offer that he deems fair, and if a different promotion presents something better, the future Hall of Famer could decide to leave.

WWE Has To Keep Rey Mysterio, No Matter What

Even in the twilight of his career, Rey Mysterio is still a world-class in-ring performer. His popularity with the fans is still at an all-time high, and it wouldn't make sense to lose him now. If finances are the main stumbling block in contract negotiations, Vince has to take care of this. He has every reason to pay Mysterio what he's worth.
