Sebastian Stan discusses Pam & Tommy's most bizarre scene, which involves Tommy Lee's talking penis. Hulu's biopic series was released earlier this year and offered a dramatized look at one of pop culture's biggest scandals. Pam & Tommy told the real-life story of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee after their sex tape was released to the public in 1996. Stan starred as Lee, while Mamma Mia 2's Lily James took the lead as Anderson, alongside a standout supporting cast that included Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, and Taylor Schilling.

Both James and Stan were hailed for their portrayals, with both stars having undergone considerable transformations to give their meticulously accurate performances. Given the somewhat bizarre nature of the story it was telling, Pam & Tommy certainly had some quirks, with one specific scene in episode 2 not only catching the attention of the series' viewers but immediately sparking discussion online. The scene in question saw Stan's character, Lee, having a lengthy discussion with his penis, with Jason Mantzoukas having provided the voice for the drummer's appendage.

While taking part in Variety's Actors on Actors series, Stan sat down with Jennifer Aniston to discuss their respective careers, before opening up about his experience with filming this outrageous scene. When asked about the scene in question, Stan shared that it was somewhat tricky as the initial concern was whether or not it was going to be "too much." Stan discussed the "interesting" decision to create a practical penis for the scene, rather than making use of CGI, sharing that the scene drew inspiration from Lee's book, in which he also wrote his penis as a separate character. Aniston: So you have a scene where you’re talking to your penis?

Stan: Yes. We talk.

Aniston: How do you prepare for that? How does it read to you on the page?

Stan: The train of thought starts to go into panic mode. It was a tricky scene to shoot, because we didn’t know if it was really going to work — if it was going to be too much or not.

Aniston: Did you shoot it kind of two ways?

Stan: No. There were components, manual and prosthetics and things, and people with wires sort of plugging things into sockets.

Aniston: That’s crazy.

Stan: Well, yeah. Look, we have the benefits of CGI. But we went old school for it, which was an interesting experience.

Aniston: Very bold. Very brave.

Stan: His penis is a character in the book that he wrote. So the writers were tipping their hat off to that, and trying to find a creative way of how this guy would confess his love for this woman.

Stan previously discussed his full-frontal nudity for the show, revealing that he doesn't "even think twice about it" and sharing that he feels it can be warranted within a project such as Pam & Tommy, so long as it isn't used purely for attention-grabbing purposes. The Marvel actor also previously discussed the rather intense weight loss that he underwent in order to achieve the same physique as Lee, whereby he fasted for 16-18 hours a day. Prior to Pam & Tommy's release, Lee expressed his support for Stan's portrayal of his younger years, with Stan having reached out to him after taking on the role.

Stan's insight into this hilariously ridiculous scene is certainly interesting and sheds some light on both the thought process behind its conception and how it was ultimately executed on the day. With Pam & Tommy having told its own self-contained story, there are currently no plans to move forward with a season 2, despite many fans feeling as though both Stan & James' portrayals deserved more screen time than just the series' eight episodes. For now, as Stan moves on to his next upcoming projects, it's fair to assume that this wild scene will likely follow the actor for the foreseeable future.
