Highlights

  • Sting's retirement opens up big questions about his future role in AEW, given his reluctance for certain positions like manager.
  • With a strong wrestling mind, Sting could excel as a backstage leader, but traditional roles may not align with his iconic status.
  • Despite Tony Khan's interest, Sting may opt to enjoy retirement and make occasional appearances to support AEW from behind the scenes.

At AEW Revolution, Sting's legendary wrestling career came to an end in front of more than 16,000 fans at the historic Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. In the main event, the 64-year-old put on a jaw-dropping performance, putting his body through tables and even a pane of glass before he got the pin over the Young Bucks, going out on top as the AEW Tag Team Champions with Darby Allin. Following Revolution, at the post-show media scrum, while sitting with Allin and AEW President Tony Khan, Sting was asked what he wanted to do next in AEW. He said:

"Tony [Khan] has mentioned me staying on board in some form or fashion. We haven't really worked anything out there yet, but I'm sure we'll have some kind of conversation and I'm saying maybe, we'll see what happens. I have no interest in being a manager or anything like that or an agent. I don't want to do any of that kind of stuff. I'm not sure what I can offer.” (h/t WrestlingNews.co)

What Is Next For Sting Following His Wrestling Retirement?

Sting Wins His Final Match Ever At AEW Revolution 2024, Retires As Tag Team Champion

Sting has one of the greatest minds in wrestling, and with his reputation, could be a phenomenal backstage leader in AEW, but what will he be doing, if anything? It's understandable that he wouldn't want to be a manager. Sting coming out in his full makeup just to stand in someone's corner wouldn't make sense. It's something his character is too big for, similar to if The Undertaker were to do the same thing, and it would draw attention away from the wrestler he was managing. And could you imagine Sting coming down to the ring without his face painted? While past wrestling legends like Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Arn Anderson have done well as AEW managers, it's not what Sting should be doing.

If he doesn't want to work as an agent either, what can Sting do? There are roles as a producer, a creative team member, and a coach that could be appealing, but don't be surprised if Sting chooses none of the above. It feels like Tony Khan wants Sting to stick around more than the Icon himself does. The best choice for Sting might be to rightfully enjoy his retirement and pop in to AEW from time to time as a backstage supportive presence. The bigger question might be, will we ever see Sting on screen in AEW again? Perhaps he can come in from time to time as a nostalgia act, getting a pop from the fans, but that might not fit him either. Hopefully, we haven't witnessed the last of Steve Borden on our TVs or in the wrestling scene altogether.
