Stone Cold Steve Austin Has Issues With 'What' Chants

'What' is by far the most commonly used WWE chant from live crowds - one that was started by 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin on a 2001 episode of SmackDown that hasn't left.

The Texas Rattlesnake knew at the time that he began a work of art, but 'What' has been overused for too long now - considering Austin has been retired for a half-decade now. And on a recent episode of The Steve Austin Show (h/t WrestlingInc.com), the Texas Rattlesnake explained his issues with the chant today.

"I never knew the 'What?' chant would stick around as long as it's stuck around," he said. "It can really mess with a guys' or girls' rhythm, what they are really trying to say. Sometimes they can get flustered."

Austin went on to say he's honored that fans will use it all these years after it was born, but he also thinks "the audience is missing out what the wrestler's saying," and added that it interrupts a superstar's rhythm.

Indeed, the 'What' chant is used all too common during superstars promos - even when it's clear what they're saying. 'What' was supposed to be a thing for Austin and his promos, but it's somehow carried over to The PG Era nearly 20 years later.

Few WWE superstars created such epic promos and crowd roars like Austin, who came up with a great deal of iconic catchphrases. But at the end of the day, 'What', has probably gone on for far too long, though there's certainly no end in sight.

Austin has made it clear that it's too much sometimes and hurts the rhythm of promos. Unfortunately, there's no way he can convince the countless amount of fans in attendance to stop saying it.
