In 1966, he married Suzanne A. D. Wilkinson, a translator. They have two sons, Ben and Tom. Although separated from Suzanne (who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1995) they were not divorced and Rhys-Davies remained close to her until her death in August 2010. He has lived with Lisa Manning (ex-host from the New Zealand television show Good Morning) since 2004.
