The Countess Was Looking For The Antichrist

In American Horror Story: Hotel, The Countess built her own family of vampiric children; a theory suggests she was looking for the Antichrist.

Ryan Murphy's horror anthology show, American Horror Story, is ripe for numerous fan theories; one suggests that Lady Gaga's character, The Countess, who was introduced in season 5, Hotel, was looking for the Antichrist.

Season 5, Hotel, was met with mixed opinions from fans and critics. It was the first season to debut without the addition of prominently featured cast member Jessica Lange. Lady Gaga rose to the top of the cast list as The Countess, a woman afflicted by a rare blood condition that carries similar symptoms to vampirism; she owns the Hotel Cortez and lives in the elaborate penthouse. She is charismatic, lethal, and as ornate as the rest of the hotel's decor; many of the interactions with others who are permanently fixed to the Cortez—such as the original owner, James March—have connections to The Countess. Interestingly, she is often followed by young, blonde, similarly afflicted children, whom she occasionally keeps securely tucked away in tiny glass coffins. This leads into one of the central stories for Hotel, as a detective and his wife are looking for their missing son, Holden.

While the Antichrist doesn't technically come into play until three seasons later—season 8, Apocalypse—one fan theory suggests that part of The Countess' inclination for collecting children and raising them might have held deeper meaning than the show let on. Murphy's work is notoriously layered, and he not only loves to drop hints within seasons, but has confirmed that every season of the show is connected as part of a larger universe.

American Horror Story Theory: Was The Countess Looking For The Antichrist?

The crux of the theory revolves around The Countess' penchant for collecting children, specifically blonde ones. This was confirmed by Ryan Murphy in an interview with EW, where he said, "I don't think she's interested unless they're blonde." While not iron-clad confirmation that The Countess looks for something specific in the children she collects and takes care of, it's close enough to make the theory more interesting. The theory itself, which circulated on Reddit, suggests that The Countess has this affinity for blonde children because she was told the Antichrist was a blonde child. It's unlikely that she was looking for him randomly when she could have easily found him; that's where this theory falls apart.

In order for The Countess to hear about the Antichrist being a blonde child, there would need to be some kind of connection between the spirits at Murder House and people who come in and out of the Hotel Cortez. They are located close to each other, as both Murder House and the Cortez are in Los Angeles. This means that it's possible they would have some overlap. Season 8, Apocalypse, served as the long-awaited crossover season between Murder House (season 1) and Coven (season 3). The Countess has eyes and ears all over the hotel, so it would be easy enough for her to find out the information about young Michael Langdon as long as there was a leak. The most likely possibility is real estate agent, Marcy (Christine Estabrook), who showed the Cortez to Will Drake (Cheyenne Jackson) and sold the Harmon family the Murder House in season 1. Hotel took place in 2015, and Michael was born in 2011.

Another potential possibility that suggests The Countess knew about the Antichrist child is a little more far-fetched; one commenter suggested that Constance (Lange) got the organs that she fed to Vivien (Connie Britton) during her pregnancy with Michael from The Countess. If Constance had some connection to The Countess, it's likely she would know about her peculiar grandchild. One other obvious connection between Hotel and Murder House is medium Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson), who came to the Cortez in 2022 to film a special for her television show. While unlikely she would speak to The Countess about Michael, she was the one who spoke of Michael being the Antichrist in the first place. The Countess would likely enjoy raising the Antichrist, and could even imbue him with her blood to make him more powerful; given the powers Michael Langdon had in American Horror Story season 8, it's probably a good thing she didn't find him.
