The Rock Says Roman Reigns WrestleMania Match Was "Locked", Teases Huge New Plan

Highlights

  • The Rock confirms that his rumored match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 was "locked" and ready to happen at SoFi Stadium.
  • The match didn't happen because they wanted to create something unprecedented and couldn't nail down the plan in time.
  • The match may now be talked about for WrestleMania 40, and if it happens, it will involve a huge storyline and aim to leave fans speechless.

According to The Rock, his rumored match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium was a lot more than just a rumor. As per his own words on the Pat McAfee Show, that match was "locked."

He explained: "All right, so The Rock headlining WrestleMania with Roman Reigns, Sofi Stadium. That was locked. What we were doing [laughs]. No, We were doing it. We were doing it." The live crowd on hand let out of audible gasp to learn that match never happened. MacAfee was shocked too. The Rock went on to try and explain why. He noted, "But let me just tell you, so — about in the beginning of 2022, Nick Khan, who we know, shout to Nick, very good friend, long time — for years. He’s the man. He was very instrumental in bringing Vince [McMahon] and I together. We all flew to LA, we met, we sat. This is the beginning of 2022, and we broke out the Teramana [the tequila brand Johnson owns]. We toasted life, toasted the business we love. And about an hour later, we started talking about the potential of what this match could be between myself and Roman Reigns, headlining WrestleMania at SoFi. And we shook hands and we hugged right there, all three of us at the table and said, ‘Let’s do this.’

When asked why it ultimately didn't go down, The Rock said they had a year to put the match together and, more importantly, the plan around it to something really big and tell an incredible story. He said the idea wasn't just to have a match, and "let’s not do something good. Let’s not do something great. Let’s do something unprecedented. And it was in what we can create for the fans that has never been done before." McAfee again asked why and The Rock responded, "So, we got really, really close. But we couldn’t actually nail what that thing was. So we decided to put our pencils down, and then we agreed, ‘Hey, listen, there is a merger [with UFC as TKO after Endeavor’s acquisition of WWE] coming up. Eventually, that will happen. There’s WrestleMania in Philadelphia."

Are The Rock and Roman Wrestling At WrestleMania 40?

The Rock heavily hinted that the match that was supposed to happen at WrestleMania 39 is now being talked about for WrestleMania 40. And, if this is something the two sides do, expect that a huge storyline will be built around it. As The Rock mentioned, it's not just about a match, it's about doing something that's never been done before and will leave fans speechless.
