The Suicide Squad: 10 Best Quotes From The Movie

There's a lot of comedy in DCEU's The Suicide Squad, but there are equally poignant quotes Harley Quinn and the rest of the team utter in the movie.

Director James Gunn has a knack for including memorable quotes in his movies, and The Suicide Squad continues that streak. The DC Extended Universe movie has been praised by critics, where the plot carries heavy themes extending beyond the premise of the team heading into Corto Maltese for their mission.

The best quotes from the movie are those that point toward deeper meanings, such as character depth and setting up things to come later in the story. Analyzing these can provide a renewed context to perceive the likes of Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and the rest of Task Force X. This also helps in realizing the quality that can be found in The Suicide Squad’s script.

10 "I Think Liberty's Your Excuse To Do Whatever You Want."

Peacemaker and Bloodsport leading the Suicide Squad into the jungle.

Fans who have read the Peacemaker’s comic book stories will be aware of how extreme he gets in his pursuit of what he perceives as peace. The Suicide Squad brought the same kind of energy from the character, who went so far as to kill Rick Flag just to keep the truth of the U.S. government's involvement with Starro quiet.

His real personality was indicated through this quote by Bloodsport early in the movie, where the latter claimed Peacemaker’s justifications of chasing liberty were just excuses. Bloodsport had the right idea all along, seeing as Peacemaker turned out to be a villain and he was inherently a violent man who masqueraded as someone who wanted peace.

9 "Let's Just Say They Were Distracted."

The Suicide Squad Bloodsport and Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller has always been a character aware of the biggest secrets in the DCEU and the movie started out with the reveal of another one she kept. Waller hid from Bloodsport’s crew that they were the second squad to land on Corto Maltese, as the ill-fated crew who got mowed down was the first.

When Bloodsport asked why the army didn’t come for them, Waller replied with cold satisfaction that they were distracted. This showed just how ruthless Waller was, as she had no respect for the people who had given their lives for a mission that was doomed from the start. For Waller, the first team’s purpose was nothing more than a distraction.

8 "We Serve The Same Master, Flag."

Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker The Suicide Squad

Despite being captured by Task Force X, The Thinker acted as if he had an ace up his sleeve the whole time. This turned out to be the case when he showed Starro to the team, revealing that the U.S. government had had a hand in the brutal experimentation on children the whole time.

When Rick Flag went into denial, The Thinker gave him a dose of reality by telling him that both of them worked for the same people. In this context, there was little to separate The Thinker from Task Force X, as their actions were for the betterment of the people doling out such torture to innocents.

7 "If I Die 'Cause I Gambled On Love, It Will Be A Worthy Death."

Ratcatcher 2 The Suicide Squad

Ratcatcher 2 was the heart of the team in The Suicide Squad, having absolute faith in the rest. It was due to her that King Shark wasn’t eliminated even after he tried to eat her. Ratcatcher 2 claimed if she were to die later she would at least have the peace of mind that it was out of her own decision.

Later on, it turned out that gambling on love and friendship was the difference-maker, as King Shark proved to be a loyal friend who helped the team in their fight against Starro. The quote was also a way to establish that Ratcatcher 2 would be the moral compass of the movie.

6 "All The Cruelty Tears You Apart After A While."

Harley Quinn Gun The Suicide Squad

Following her debut in the first movie, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was unlike the comics, in that she’s let go of her obsession with The Joker and to be loved. Despite Silvio Luna successfully charming her, Harley pulled the trigger on him when Luna revealed he was willing to kill children if Corto Maltese people didn’t bow to his orders.

After killing Luna, Harley thought out loud that she had promised herself never to fall into the circle of abuse she’d once suffered under The Joker. This quote showed how she felt inside the whole time, with Harley unwilling to be cruel anymore because it was ultimately self-destructive.

5 "I Have No Issue With How Much I Love My Father."

Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher in The Suicide Squad

It seemed as if Ratcatcher 2 was similar to Bloodsport’s daughter, with the implication that she was a prisoner at Belle Reve due to father issues. However, she openly spoke about the love she had for her father instead, having no resentment for how she was raised.

This led to a touching flashback where Ratcatcher 2’s memories of her father were shown, as the two were very happy even when living in poverty. Ratcatcher 2’s words moved Bloodsport the most, who realized that being a loving father was ultimately the most important accomplishment he could have.

4 "I Knew Sebastian Sensed Good In You For A Reason."

Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad

The portrayal of Robert DuBois was unlike the Bloodsport in comic book stories, as he was made out to ultimately have a good heart. Ratcatcher 2’s pet rat, Sebastian, evidently communicated to her that Bloodsport could be a hero, which came to pass when he decided to fight Starro.

It was here when Ratcatcher 2 uttered this quote, proving that Sebastian wasn’t just any comic relief and that the rat was alluding to Bloodsport’s eventual turn toward good. Considering that Bloodsport was willing to die by Waller's hands to save people he didn't know, Sebastian was definitely right.

3 "I'm A Superhero!"

Polka-Dot-Man-The-Suicide-Squad-brightened

Although the death of Polka-Dot Man was a shame, he at least died happily. This was in stark contrast to the death wish he carried for most of the movie, which was born out of the shame he felt for his condition.

Eventually, he realized that he could channel this for good, as Polka-Dot Man was proving to be the biggest threat to Starro. In his final moments, Polka-Dot Man felt true happiness by calling himself a superhero who saved lives, making his life worth something before he was crushed to death the next moment.

2 "I Joined The Military To Serve My Country. Not To Be Its Puppet."

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker The Suicide Squad

Rick Flag proved himself to be a man of morals when he found out about the testing on humans. Having once been loyal to Waller, he turned on her and his country by intending to leak the flash drive containing evidence to the press.

Unlike Peacemaker, who was fanatically loyal to the people hurting innocents, Flag argued that his loyalties to his country were due to his belief in what’s right. He realized he was being controlled the whole time and decided to go rogue because it was the decent thing to do, even if it did cost him his life in the end.

1 "If Rats Have Purpose, So Do We All."

Ratcatcher commanding an army of rats in The Suicide Squad

This quote was a way of communicating to viewers that everyone deserves to have a sense of self-worth. Ratcatcher 2 remembered her father’s words when she guided all the rats in Corto Maltese toward Starro, realizing what he had meant.

By doing so, she put the wisdom of her father to use as she proved she had a lot more to give than most thought. All in all, the message here was not to lose faith since no one knows when they can turn out to be the most important person there can be.
