Obituary of Margaret H. Lenore

Margaret H. Lenore, a beloved member of the Marquette community, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023, at UP Health System – Marquette. She was 89 years old. Margaret was known for her kind and compassionate nature, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Early Life and Education

Margaret Wessman, daughter of Helgie and Florence (Larson) Wessman, was born on October 28, 1934, in Marquette. She spent her early years in Sweden and later moved to Marquette, where she attended Graveraet High School. Margaret’s upbringing in Sweden instilled in her a strong sense of cultural heritage and a love for her hometown.

Marriage and Family

On June 16, 1956, Margaret married the love of her life, John Lenore, in a beautiful ceremony at St. Peter Cathedral. Together, they built a loving family and shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother, cherishing every moment spent with her family. Her unwavering love and support created a warm and nurturing home for her sons, Michael Lenore of Marquette and John Lenore of Negaunee Township.

Professional Career

Margaret dedicated thirty years of her life to serving the City of Marquette as a secretary. She held various positions within the city, including roles in the Police Department, Board of Light and Power, and as the City Manager’s secretary. Margaret’s commitment to her work and her exceptional organizational skills made her an invaluable asset to the city. In 1996, she announced her well-deserved retirement, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication.

Interests and Hobbies

Outside of her professional life, Margaret had a zest for life and a love for adventure. She had a passion for traveling and exploring new places, immersing herself in different cultures and experiences. Margaret also had a green thumb and found solace in tending to her plants and gardens. One of her favorite pastimes was taking leisurely walks on the Island, enjoying the beauty of nature and the tranquility it provided.

Margaret is survived by her devoted husband, John Lenore, her loving sons, Michael Lenore and John Lenore, and her sister, Linda Cornill of Norway, MI. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory. Margaret was preceded in death by her brothers, Peter Wessman, Leonard, David, and Birger Wessman.
