Where Was Baywatch 2017 Filmed: All Locations
The 2017 Baywatch movie starring Dwayne Johnson wasn't well-received but it did feature some nice scenery, and here's where it was primarily filmed.
Here's where the 2017 Baywatch movie was filmed. History may record Baywatch as one of the biggest TV shows of the 1990s, but it almost died an early death. This David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider) fronted series followed the misadventures of a group of very photogenic L.A. lifeguards, but the show was actually cancelled by NBC following its first season. The show was rescued when it moved to first-run syndication instead where it became a global smash, and launched the careers of actors like Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Pamela Anderson.
At the height of the show's success it spawned a spinoff with Baywatch Nights, where Hasselhoff's Mitch becomes a P.I. for some reason. In a bid to keep that show alive season 2 tried to mix things up with some X-Files-inspired cases, but it was cancelled by the end of the year. Baywatch itself came to an end with the 2003 TV movie Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, which reunited most of the cast for a proper sendoff. A big-screen adaptation had been mooted for years, with Eli Roth (Hostel) linked to an early iteration.
The Baywatch movie finally arrived in 2017 with Dwayne Johnson playing Mitch, and the cast rounded out by Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Priyanka Chopra. While the film aimed for a 21 Jump Street-style comic reinvention, most of the gags felt flat, and Johnson - being a good sport - later accepted the film's award for "The Razzie Nominee So Bad You Loved It." The movie might be a dud but it did at least feature some nice scenery for the cast to run around in slow motion, so here's where Baywatch was shot.
Where the original series was set in L.A. - though it moved to Hawaii for the final seasons - the Baywatch movie moved the setting to Florida instead. Filming started in Deerfield Beach in Florida, which is where the lifeguard building is based. The opening scene where Mitch saves the life of an injured kite surfer was shot at the South Inlet Park in Boca Raton, with the Boca Raton Resort & Club being where some of the party sequences were shot.
Baywatch also shot in locations like Tybee Island and Savannah, Georgia for scenes like the jet ski chase. While there were early plans for a Baywatch 2, it appears the negative critical reception combined with Dwayne Johnson's ever-busy schedule make a direct follow-up unlikely, though a reboot of the TV show is currently in the works.
