WWE spent a lot of time making fans wonder who was under the Kane mask when an Imposter Kane started attacking the real one. Kane was being targeted with his past look being used by this imposter to get in his head for weeks.

The one match between the real and fake Kane was a disaster that led to WWE dropping the angle. Current WWE talent Luke Gallows was tasked with the challenging role. Gallows thankfully had other opportunities to make his name when this gimmick failed.

9 Who Attacked Edge At No Way Out 2003

Edge Kurt Angle

An overlooked mystery to never get answered on screen featured Edge being attacked at No Way Out 2003 in a backstage segment and being replaced. Edge was originally meant to team with Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit to face Kurt Angle, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.

WWE did this to write Edge off due to a real injury, but it clearly was meant to set something else up that never came. Edge revealed on Angle’s podcast that one of his teammates Edge or Lesnar was meant to be the attacker until WWE felt it was no longer needed in his return.

8 Who Was Behind GTV

GTV

The Attitude Era allowed WWE to create many mysteries like the Higher Power or Steve Austin getting run over by a car. However, there was a smaller mystery to never get a pay off or reveal that fans were interested in.

GTV featured filmed backstage segments a video camera catching various wrestlers in compromising positions to advance matches or storylines. The angle ended without a reveal, but it was meant to be Goldust. Dustin Rhodes leaving WWE for WCW killed any chance to reveal him, and WWE gave up on it.

7 Why Didn't Kevin Nash Wrestle At WrestleMania 18

NWO WWE

The New World Order joining WWE made it surprising that Kevin Nash did not have a match at WrestleMania 18. WWE booked Hulk Hogan to face The Rock and Scott Hall to face Steve Austin in singles matches.

Nash being a bigger main event act in WCW made it surprising he was off the card. The original plan was for Hall to defeat Austin and for the nWo to attack Rock for beating Hogan. Nash not wrestling meant he’d be fresh to help their attack over the weakened faces at the end of the night.

6 Who Was Going To Run WWE After Vince McMahon's Limo Explosion

Vince Limo

Multiple mysteries existed when Vince McMahon entered a limousine, and it exploded. WWE started a storyline about McMahon’s scripted death that had to be dropped when the Chris Benoit tragedy happened.

One aspect of the original mystery was revealed when former WWE writer Court Bauer shared the plan. Vince’s brother Roderick was set to make his on-screen debut as a completely different character playing a logical face as the story progressed with names being considered for the culprit setting up the explosion.

5 Who Was The NWO Sting

Sting And nWo Sting

WCW did a great job with their fake Sting character genuinely confusing fans at first. Everyone sold it like the real Sting was helping the New World Order attack WCW talents. There was no reason to believe it was a fake since Hulk Hogan turning meant anyone could.

Part of the magic was that they picked an unknown wrestler that had the same size and make of Sting play the fake one. Jeff Farmer was the fake Sting that joined the nWo to continue impersonating him. WCW trying to have an established wrestler impersonate Sting in the past, like Barry Windham didn’t work out as well.

4 Why Didn't WWE Continue WCW

Buff Bagwell DDT Booker T

The start of the Invasion storyline in WWE showed that WCW would continue as its own brand with their first few matches. Arn Anderson and Scott Hudson called the matches with the WCW referee and talents having their own time.

WWE gave up on this idea relatively early due to Buff Bagwell vs Booker T being an awful match with little crowd interest. There were a few more WCW exclusive matches, but WWE pivoted to the WWE vs WCW and ECW feud rather than WCW continuing as its own.

3 Who Was The Father Of Maria Kanellis' Child

Mike-And-Maria-Bennett

One of the more recent WWE mysteries that never panned out featured Maria Kanellis telling Mike Bennett he wasn’t the father of her unborn child when announcing her pregnancy. Maria running down Mike for weeks peaked with her winning the 24/7 Championship. WWE released the two before revealing the father, but Maria shared the original plans.

Mike was going to eventually be named the father after Maria lied and would stand up to her for a face turn playing into his real-life recovery from addiction. Paul Heyman being a huge supporter of Maria and Mike and running Raw creative at the time has this explanation making sense.

2 Who Was Suicide In TNA

Suicide TNA

TNA pushed the masked Suicide character after their video game showcased the character. Various versions of the character existed, but fans didn’t get to see a person behind it until later years. TJ Perkins was unmasked when the name changed from Suicide to Manik.

However, the previous versions of the Suicide character were played by various wrestlers. Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian were the main wrestlers to wrestle under the Suicide mask. TNA trusted them to play the risky character when testing it out.

1 Who Helped Vince & Shane McMahon Beat Steve Austin In Ladder Match

McMahons v Stone Cold King of The Ring 1999 Cropped

WWE had a strange finish of the King of the Ring 1999 when Steve Austin faced Vince and Shane McMahon in a ladder match for control of the company. A mystery person was raising the briefcase above the ring higher whenever Austin climbed the ladder and moved it down for Vince and Shane.

There was never an explanation for the person helping the McMahon’s cheat Austin out of the match. Future reports confirmed it was meant to be The Big Boss Man, but WWE didn’t want to relieve him right away.
