Following his triumph over Kassius Ohno in November 2012, Richie Steamboat's presence in NXT suddenly dwindled. His disappearance from televised matches raised concerns and left fans wondering about his future in the promotion. Wrestling Observer Newsletter shed light on the situation in 2013, stating that Steamboat faced a severe back injury that required surgery. The injury was deemed potentially career-threatening, further casting a shadow of uncertainty over Richie Steamboat's wrestling future.

Ricky disclosed that Richie had been practicing and perfecting the execution of a moonsault, a high-risk aerial maneuver, during his time in FCW, which was WWE's developmental territory at the time. He said, "He was practicing a moonsault and really doing well with it. I mean nailing it every time... That night, the match was at FCW, and he came to me and said, 'Dad, do you think I should try the moonsault?' And I said, 'I have been watching you all day today, and you've been nailing it.' So lo-and-behold, he tried the moonsault, but he over-rotated, and he ended up hurting four disks in his back, not one but four. So that's what ended it."

A Missed Wrestling Opportunity For Richie Steamboat
It is undeniably disappointing that fans will not have the opportunity to witness Richie Steamboat follow in his father's footsteps and carve out his own path as a WWE Superstar.
