10 Superhero Movies & TV Shows To Look Forward To In 2022
From The Batman to Moon Knight and The Boys season 3, there are some highly anticipated superhero movies and TV shows releasing in 2022.
For fans of the superhero genre, 2022 has much to offer in the form of a ton of new superhero movies and TV shows from Marvel and DC. As if ruling the box office wasn't enough, since last year the MCU has also started rolling out limited series' set between the grander schemes of the movies, and many new character debuts are set to occur this year.
On the other hand, DC also has an exciting lineup of movies prepared for release, including the new Batman and Flash film, and also Black Adam starring The Rock. On the TV side of things Batwoman, Titans, Doom Patrol, and many others are also set to return. Below some of the most exciting projects releasing in 2022 are discussed.
10 Movie: The Batman (2022) - March 4, 2022
There have been more live-action versions of Batman than almost any other hero, and yet there is something magnetic about the character that never fails to draw people in. Twilight star Robert Pattinson will pick up the cowl to become the 3rd actor to play Batman in the last decade, in this upcoming film being directed by Matt Reeves. One of the most anticipated superhero movies of 2022, The Batman will explore the life of a younger Bruce Wayne in his early days of vigilantism, as he faces off against enemies like the Riddler to become the Dark Knight of Gotham City.
9 TV Show: Moon Knight - March 30
Oscar Isaac's name will be added to the ever-growing list of actors who are part of the MCU with the release of Moon Knight. The recently released trailer showed off its trippy premise, and it can be presumed that the show will be leaning in heavily into the psychological aspects of its main protagonist, who suffers from multiple personality disorder. Ethan Hawke will play Arthur Harrow and Midnight Man will also reportedly appear, two of the most powerful villains of Moon Knight from the comics.
8 Movie: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness - May 6, 2022
Spiderman: No Way Home pulled off the near-impossible by fulfilling and even defying fan expectations, and the consequences of the film's events will play out in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Dr. Strange has pulled off a great many magical achievements in the MCU so far, but these feats come at a cost, and the teaser for the film says that Strange will be punished for his "desecration of reality".
What that exactly means remains to be seen, and the only thing fans have at the moment is sky-high levels of expectations about what characters may or may not appear in the film.
7 TV Show: The Boys S3 - June 3, 2022
Carried by the terrific acting of its cast and simply bonkers writing, The Boys is a superhero show that is very anti-superhero. One of the highest-rated Amazon Prime original series, it is based on the comic book series of the same name, and the explicit source material is a big part of its appeal. Not much has been revealed about what over-the-top antics are coming in the upcoming season, except that it will take inspiration from the comic miniseries "Herogasm" which is as wholesome as the title suggests. A new superhero, Soldier Boy, will also be introduced, who will be just as bad as Homelander.
6 Movie: Thor: Love and Thunder - July 8, 2022
The God of Thunder has been through a good deal of tragedies in the MCU over the years, but at least he is lucky enough to be the only character yet to get their fourth solo film. Christian Bale will be making his MCU debut in Thor: Love and Thunder as the fearsome villain Gorr the God Butcher.
In even more exciting news, Natalie Portman will be returning to the MCU and all the hints point towards her becoming the next Thor in line with what happened in the Mighty Thor comics.
5 TV Show: She-Hulk - TBD
Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner and Hulk have both played important parts in events that have shaped the MCU as a whole, and yet he has yet to receive his own solo movie or series. She-Hulk will be focusing on Jennifer Walters, played by Orphan Black actress Tatiana Maslany, who in the comics is the cousin of Bruce Banner who becomes part of the extended Hulk family after getting a blood transfusion from Bruce. But something that only comic book fans know about She-Hulk is that she is fundamentally different from Bruce's Hulk and much more than a mindless smashing machine.
4 Movie: Black Adam - July 29
Dwayne Johnson will be hanging up his nice guy boots to play the part of the titular antihero in Black Adam. The film is a spin-off of 2019's Shazam!, and both characters have plenty of history in the comics that goes back ages. Black Adam is a five-thousand-year-old being strong enough to go head to head against the likes of Superman, with powers that are drawn from various Egyptian Gods, so there is no lack of great material for the film to adapt from. Pierce Brosnan will be playing Doctor Fate in the film, and many members of the Justice Society of America are set to appear.
3 TV Show: Ms. Marvel - TBD
Kamala Khan is one of the newer characters in Marvel Comics, and the character's unique ethnicity as a Pakistani American tied with the fact that she is a teenager has helped her become a hit amongst comics readers. A big fan of Carol Danvers (the current Captain Marvel), she goes on to adopt Carol's old name Ms. Marvel after gaining shapeshifting superpowers due to being an Inhuman.
The character will be played by Iman Vellani in her very first acting role in Ms. Marvel, and has already been confirmed to appear in 2023's The Marvels.
2 Movie: The Flash - November 4, 2022
Taking into account all the leaks and rumors, The Flash is shaping up to be potentially the most ambitious DC film ever made. The movie will be adapting the famous "Flashpoint" story arc from the comics, during which the Flash traveled to the past to prevent the death of his mother and ended up drastically changing the DC Universe to its core, and something similar could happen for the DCEU as well. It has already been revealed that Michael Keaton's and Ben Affleck's Batman will return, and there are also other versions of Batman that could appear in the film alongside the new Supergirl.
1 TV Show: Doom Patrol S4 - TBD
The timelines of all the DC TV shows and movies are messy, but that shouldn't stop fans from enjoying the underrated masterpiece that is Doom Patrol. For three strong seasons, the series has maintained its humorous, sometimes vulgar but always entertaining tone, filled with characters each more eccentric than the other. There are some things you need to know about the Doom Patrol before starting the show, but for the most part, the show's accessibility is one of its best qualities. There has been a new season every year since the show's premiere in 2019, so season 4 can certainly be expected in 2022.
