Backstage News On Why WWE Made Asuka A Babyface Again

On last week's edition of Monday Night Raw, Becky Lynch relinquished the Raw Women's Championship and awarded it to Asuka.

Lynch announced her pregnancy and told Asuka that the 2020 women's Money in the Bank winner would actually win the title instead of the briefcase and contract. With Lynch going on hiatus, WWE decided to make some major changes in the Raw women's division.

According to Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co, WWE quietly made the Empress of Tomorrow a babyface again. A source also told Davis that Asuka's tag team partner, Kairi Sane, will be "a face now until Vince (McMahon) changes his mind."

Per Davis' report, WWE wasn't initially planning to make Asuka and Sane faces again. However, they ultimately decided that "a babyface champion" was necessary since Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax - two of Raw's primary heels - are " in line for title matches in the coming months."Lynch held the Raw Women's Championship for a record 373 days, having captured it at WrestleMania 35. In her last match, Lynch successfully defended the title against Baszler at WrestleMania 36.

Following her Money in the Bank victory and subsequent capturing of the Raw Women's title, Asuka made incredible WWE history. She became the first superstar to win the Raw, SmackDown and NXT Women's Championships, the Women's Tag Team Championships, the Money in the Bank and the Royal Rumble. Now, WWE will turn to Asuka as the new main babyface on the Raw women's division. She flourished in the main event role on SmackDown before, and she's always had immense popularity among the fans. Simply put, WWE knows they're in very good hands here.

This Is The Right Decision

Between Asuka, Jax and Baszler, one of them simply had to turn face. Both Baszler and Jax have dominated the majority of their opponents, rarely taking clean losses, so it makes sense for them to remain heels. Asuka has had plenty of success as a babyface already, so WWE made the right call here.
