Darren McCaughan Stats & Scouting Report — College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects

McCaughan is a feel-to-pitch college righthander with a track record better than his stuff might indicate. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder won Big West pitcher of the year as a sophomore and made the 2016 USA Collegiate National Team. Overall McCaughan went 22-5, 2.36 in his career heading into the 2017 NCAA Tournament. McCaughan accomplished that despite no pitch in his arsenal registering better than average. His four-seam fastball sits 87-88 mph, and he backs it up with a mid-80s sinker, low-80s changeup and upper-70s slider. McCaughan mostly works off his fastball and changeup, using his sinker with late cut to get swings and misses. His slider jumped forward as a junior but is still a work in progress. McCaughan relies on mixing pitches, a deceptive delivery with cross-body action and above-average command to survive. His resume is decorated enough some team will give him a chance.
