Defining and managing a cost object - Documentation for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization 20.02
To view cost objects
Select Chargeback > Cost objects. The Cost objects page displays a list of all existing cost objects that have been configured in TrueSight Capacity Optimization.
The Cost objects page consists of Cost objects table with the following columns:
Column | Description |
|---|---|

| Type | Indicates the type of the cost object. For example, Mixed, Composite Cost Object, etc. |
| Key | Indicates the unique key used to identify the cost object. |
| Creation date | Indicates the creation date of the cost object. |
The following figure shows the cost objects list.
To view details of a cost object
- Select Chargeback > Cost objects.
The Cost objects page is displayed. - Click name of the required cost object.
The details page of the selected cost object is displayed.
Column | Description |

The following figure shows the sample Details page for the selected cost object page for a cost object based on a template.
To add a basic cost object
- Select Chargeback > Cost objects.
The Cost objects page is displayed. - Select Add > Basic cost object.
The Add basic cost object page is displayed. Enter the following details:
Name: Type the required name of the cost object.
Key: Type a unique alphanumeric key to be used for identifying the cost object. In addition, this key is used in historical data series for the chargeback data that is saved in the TrueSight Capacity Optimization Data Warehouse. For example, use ACME_webservice_1 where ACME indicates domain name and webservice indicates cost object name.
Description: Type the required description of the new cost object.
Template/Custom: Select whether the cost object should be Based on template or Custom.
Based on the option selected, select the required tab to view details for the available fields.
Field Description Template Select the required template from the list. Template description Provides the description of the selected template. Field
Description
Fixed rate
Select this option to create a cost object that is measured using fixed rate for an unlimited consumption of the allocated resource. - Consumption unit: Indicates the unit to be used for measuring the consumption of resource by the selected target (for example, hour). You can modify the unit as required.
- Cost rate unit: Specify the measurement unit to be used for measuring the cost.
- Default cost rate:Specify the default cost value. This value is by default configured in all cost rates that are created using this cost object.
- Default cost rate time unit: Select the required cost rate time unit from the list.
Allocation based
Select this option to create a cost object that is measured based on subscriptions and licenses utilized in your environment. - Allocation Types: Select Named (to account costs based on resource name) or Quantity (to account costs based on resource quantity).
For the Named allocation type, select the following fields:- Allocated resources: Select either a system or business driver to allocate.
- Entity types: Click Edit and select the required entity type from the Available items list and add to the Selected items. Click Apply.
- Metadata (Advanced only): Click Add to add a metadata to the cost object and modify the required name. Click Apply. You can add more than one metadata.
- Consumption unit: Indicates the unit to be used for measuring the consumption of allocated resource by the selected target (for example, Inst. hour). You can modify the unit as required.
- Cost rate unit: Specify the measurement unit to be used for measuring the allocation based cost for the selected resource (for example, Inst.).
- Default cost rate:Specify the default cost value. This value is by default configured in all cost rates that are created using this cost object.
- Default cost rate time unit: Select the required cost rate time unit from the list.
Utilization based
Select this option to create a cost object that is measured based on the utilization that is derived using a metric. - Allocated resources: Select either a system or business driver to allocate.
- Entity types: Click Edit and select the required chargeable entity type from the Available items list and add to the Selected items. Click Apply.
- Unit of measurement: Click Add to add metrics to define how to define the cost rate and associated details for the required metric. You can modify the required name of the new unit of measurement. For each unit of measurement, configure the following properties in the Unit of measurement area, then click Apply to save your changes.
- Metric: Enter the name of a utilization metric or select a metric from the list that is compatible with the type of allocated resources.
- Subkey: Specify a key that uniquely identifies the resource within the cost object (for example, CPU).
- Scale factor: Specify a scaling factor for the selected metric that places a relative weight – a percentage or multiple – on its value (for example, only 90% of CPU utilization).
- Consumption unit: Indicates the unit to be used for measuring the consumption of resource by the selected target (for example, hour or minute). This unit is updated based on the scale factor used. You can modify the unit as required. If the scale factor is set to No scale, specify the cost rate unit as required.
- Cost rate unit: Indicates the cost rate unit that is to be used for the measuring the utilization based cost for the selected resource. This unit is updated based on the scale factor used. You can modify the unit as required. If the scale factor is set to No scale, specify the cost rate unit as required.
- Default cost rate: Specify the default cost value. This value is by default configured in all cost rates that are created using this cost object.
- Default cost rate time unit: Select the required cost rate time unit from the list.
- Interpolation (Advanced only): Select this option to enable interpolation for missing data.
- Subresource (Advanced only): Specify a subresource if you want to filter a specific subresource utilization.
- Metadata (Advanced only): Click Add to add a metadata to the cost object and modify the required name. Click Apply. You can add more than one metadata.
Mixed
Select this option to use a combination of all cost object types described in this table. The configuration of properties is the same as that for the utilization-based type, except that you can manually select the Calculation mode – fixed-rate, allocation-based, or utilization-based – when adding the utilization metrics.
- To finish creating your cost object, click Save.
Adding a composite cost object
You can add a composite cost objects using existing basic cost objects.
Before you begin
Ensure that required basic cost objects are available. For more details, see To add a basic cost object.
