Eric Bischoff Calls CM Punk "Biggest Financial Flop" In Wrestling History
Eric Bischoff and CM Punk continue to have their back and forth war of words. Most recently, Bischoff explained why he's even bothering to mix it up verbally with the AEW star and he explained that he's not looking to pick a fight but that Punk's self-elevated status in the industry opens him up to criticism, and Bischoff then proceeded to call Punk “the biggest financial flop in the history of wrestling.”
Those are pretty strong words and it's not clear how accurate they are. Knowing would take having intimate details of Punk's current contract with AEW, how much the ratings of the shows he's on in AEW have been affected, how much ad revenue was generated from his involvement, and the ticket sales and merchandise sold total before being able to accurately determine how much AEW has made or lost after signing Punk. Perhaps that's not the point. What Biscoff seems to be getting at is that AEW invested a lot into Punk coming back and he's not come close to making the impact everyone thought he would.
Bischoff said that he was merely responding to some "very edgy comments" that he's assuming were directed at him. Bischoff is referring to comments Punk made that he, Bryan Danielson, and Adam Cole joining AEW was bigger than Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan forming the nWo. As wrestling fans know, that angle and the Outsiders' jump from WWE to WCW was one of the biggest things to happen in the wrestling industry, period. Bischoff was the man responsible.

Did Punk Bring This Upon Himself?
"I love to counter punch," Bischoff said. He added, "Sometimes I don’t really wake up until I’ve been hit really hard, it’s just my nature but he threw a punch on social media and I thought this would be fun so I responded." Bischoff said that Punk did this to himself by making such a wild claim and that he hasn't been able to back it up, especially if you look at how AEW's ratings haven't seen much of an increase.
Bischoff does have a point. He didn't put it out there that Punk's arrival in AEW was the biggest thing in wrestling... Punk did. Bischoff said, "I took his quote and posted it and said how’s that working out? Which it isn’t, obviously. In terms of a return on investment, this guy has to be the biggest financial flop in the history of wrestling.”
