First Look at Jon Hamm in Chevy Chase Role
The first images have been released for the upcoming Jon Hamm comedy Confess, Fletch, a reboot based on the same novels as the 1985 Chevy Chase movie.
Three first-look images have dropped from the upcoming Jon Hamm comedy reboot Confess, Fletch. This is a new adaptation from the series of Fletch novels by author Gregory Mcdonald. The original film adaptation, which came to theaters in 1985, starred Chevy Chase as the titular Los Angeles Times reporter who gets himself into hot water when he is hired to murder a millionaire with a supposedly terminal illness. That film got a 1989 sequel titled Fletch Lives, which wasn't based on any particular text. Jon Hamm's new Fletch film, which was announced in Summer 2020, will be adapted from the second novel of the series, rebooting the character and telling a fresh story in the process.
Confess, Fletch will follow the intrepid reporter as he attempts to discover who stole his wealthy heiress girlfriend's priceless art collection. In the process, he becomes the prime suspect for a murder which he must also solve, and the list of potential killers includes his girlfriend herself. The rest of the cast is filled out by John Slattery, Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, Annie Mumolo, Roy Wood Jr., and Lorenza Izzo from the Eli Roth horror films The Green Inferno and Knock Knock.
This week, EW shared a trio of official first-look images from Confess, Fletch, which was shot in Summer 2021. The images all feature Jon Hamm's more dapper, put-together version of Fletch, but they also showcase two other characters from the movie. One shows an elegant (and perhaps disguised) Marcia Gay Harden as The Countess, and the other reteams Hamm with his Mad Men co-star John Slattery in an as-yet-unspecified role. Check out the full-size images below:
Confess, Fletch was directed by Greg Mottola, who has straddled the line between film and television, directing comedies including Arrested Development, Superbad, Dave, and Adventureland. Mottola co-wrote the script with Zev Borow, an executive story editor and writer on the Zachary Levi series Chuck. Although an official release date for the film hasn't been announced yet, it is expected sometime in 2022.
The Fletch franchise has been dormant for quite some time, with the final Fletch novel being published just one year after the first film. As it's been over three decades since the character has graced the silver screen, Confess, Fletch will need to have a strong hook to bring in more than just the cult comedy audience that embraced Fletch after its release. These first-look images don't reveal too much about the tone of the film, so audiences will have a better sense of what they are getting once a trailer is released, which will likely determine the fate of the movie once and for all.
