The battles are already interrupted abruptly by barely necessary to a little necessary conversations. I don't think a trainer throwing a berry and the Pokémon catching it in the air could make anything look awkward in the course of events during the battle. The held items were handled great during the XY run, actually. I liked how they were given as accessories, all of which are thought cleverly. Not to mention the items could make a great turn of events and give plot twists only if written properly.
However I wouldn't have preferred having such turn of events in ordinary battles. The limitation of having them only in some Gym battles and more stratically during the leagues could make great interpretation of the concept itself.
