The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Faces 1 Huge Challenge Bringing In Yoshi

The Super Mario Bros. Movie already teased that Yoshi would appear in the sequel, and while this is exciting, it also sets up a potential problem.

Summary

  • Yoshi's introduction to The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could overshadow other characters, posing a challenge in finding the right balance.
  • While Yoshi is a beloved character, he doesn't need to be the central focus of the story, as there are other unexplored corners of the Mario universe.
  • Yoshi has enough lore to carry his own solo movie, but the challenge lies in his lack of speech. However, animated films like WALL-E have successfully centered around silent protagonists.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will finally introduce Yoshi to Illumination and Nintendo's beloved movie franchise, but this debut will cause the sequel to face one huge challenge. Yoshi is undoubtedly one of the most exciting aspects of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, with the lovable dinosaur companion's presence being sorely missed in the first film. However, bringing Yoshi into the sequel may be a two-edged sword, as it could cause a huge problem with The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2's other characters.

While The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured all kinds of popular characters from the iconic video game franchise, such as Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Peach, and more, there was one notable absence throughout the film: Yoshi. Luckily, the post-credits scene for The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured a lone Yoshi egg deep in the sewers, teasing Yoshi's involvement in the sequel. Yoshi's introduction opens up a whole new corner of the Mario universe that the film series hasn't seen before, but it also means that the film will have to leap a major hurdle.

Yoshi Could Overshadow The Other Super Mario Bros. Characters

Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy

Although Yoshi is an exciting addition to The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, his introduction runs the risk of overshadowing other Mario characters. Yoshi is one of the most popular characters from the franchise, with him being the subject of multiple spin-off series. While it is nice to have him in the upcoming sequel, the film will have to find the right balance between him and other new and returning characters

While having Yoshi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie could work, he doesn't need to be the center of the story. So many corners of the Mario universe, such as the locales seen in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey, haven't been explored yet. Yoshi's character tends to focus on Mario and Luigi's origins, and since the first movie already covered this topic, it really isn't needed again.

Yoshi Has Enough Nintendo Lore For A Solo Movie

Yoshi has a surprising amount of lore in the Mario franchise - enough to carry his own solo movie. Rather than trying to cram the story of Yoshi's Island and other games into The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, it would be better to explore this corner of the universe in Yoshi's own movie. After all, Yoshi has carried plenty of stories before, so it makes sense for him to do it again in his own spin-off.

The only issue with a movie centered around Yoshi is that he doesn't really talk. Yoshi can say a few words, but he isn't nearly as expressive as characters like Mario or Donkey Kong. Despite this, a Yoshi movie could still work, as animated films like WALL-E have centered on mostly silent protagonists. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 should only set up Yoshi, saving his lore for another spin-off or sequel.
